"Aye, and likely to be drawn out, unless either combatent can produce a tecnique that can threaten the other." Vic nodded. Herne nuzzled his mistress, then climbed down off of her shoulders and rolled onto his back, watching the fight upside down.

"Daisy needs this battle, though. This will be a good experience for both of them," Cassie remarked. "It's kinda like looking at myself a couple years ago when Gintama and I were just starting out. My partner was still an Eevee then." She looked at Vic. "It must be rewarding to kind of mentor these younger trainers and watch them struggle and grow."

"...Aye." Vic said, recalling her days starting out with Herne as a feisty Eevee himself. "It's, for lack of more colorful description... so incredible to watch young trainers and thier companions forge the same fond memories you did with your own comrades. Some of the scarier ones, too. Almost like watching your children live thier lives."
This she knew from personal experience--she had a five-year-old son from a relationship that hadn't worked out; whom she was now raising as a single parent.

Cassie took out her pokedex. "Tangrowth, the Vine pokemon. It ensnares its prey using its arms made of vines. If an arm is cut off, it grows back."

"Daisy, Tackle attack!" Mallory called out.
"Chika!" said Daisy, running in a rush right at Tangrowth.
"Tangrowth, use Vine Whip!"
"Tang!" said tangrowth, whipping out its arms to knock Daisy away. Daisy rolled away in the dirt but wasn't too hurt by the vines themselves.
"If Tangrowth keeps that up, it'll be hard for Daisy to get in close," Cassie observed.
"Daisy, try a Razor Leaf attack and then follow right up with a Tackle," said Mallory.
"Chika!" Daisy ran again at Tangrowth and flipped the leaf on its head, sending a barrage of spinning sharp leaves... cutting of Tangrowth's arms and landing a good solid Tackle before the arms could grow back. Tangrowth staggered back but then wrapped up Daisy just as its viney arms regenerated.
"Great, Tangrowth, now use Slam!" said the boy.
"Tangrowth!" it said and did a whirl to create momentum before it sent Daisy smashing hard into the ground.
Daisy cried out, 'Chika!' as it slid painfully across the battlefield. She struggled to get up.
"Daisy, are you okay?" Mallory said. She was debating on whether to call back Daisy and forfeit the match... She didn't want to see her partner take too much damage.
Daisy got back on her feet and looked up at the sun, she started to glow for a few seconds and when the glow faded, she looked better... using her Synthesis.
"You're Chikorita's tough," said the boy.
"Thanks! So is your Tangrowth," Mallory said. She looked at Daisy... "Are you ready, Daisy?"
"Chika!" she nods.
"Razor Leaf, let's go!
"Ancientpower, Tangrowth!"
The spinning leaves met the rock attack head on and collided... some of the orbs got through and Daisy barely dodged them.
"Vine Whip, Tangrowth... keep Daisy from getting too close!" said the boy.
Tangrowth's whips lashed out... Daisy dodged three but a fourth tripped her up. A fifth vine, she had to jump back from.
"Razor Leaf those vines!"
"Chika!" said Daisy, sending sharp leaves to trim back those vines... which just grew back a few seconds later.
Neither side was giving an inch. Some kids passing by on their way home along a side street had stopped to watch the battle. Some were even rooting for Tangrowth or Daisy.
"Ancientpower, let's go!" said the boy.
"Tangrowth!" said Tangrowth, quickly sending orbs of energy at Daisy.
"Chikaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" said Daisy and the leaf on her head glowed green before unleashing a vortex right into Ancientpower... the two attacks collided. Then another barrage came through the smoke and struck Tangrowth hard dead center!

"What was that?!" said Cassie.

"I've never seen Daisy do that," remarked Gintama.

Tangrowth grunted from the attack but stayed on its feet.

Mallory was shocked, too. "Daisy, what the?"
Tangrowth looked kind of doubled over. "Tangrowth, you can do it!" cried the boy.
"Tackle it, Daisy!" Mallory said, remembering the battle was still going on.
"Chika!" Daisy came running through the smoke as it was starting to clear.
"Tangrowth, Vine Whip!"
Tangrowth saw Daisy coming and then started to whirl around, flailing its vines.
Daisy went in low, below Tangrowth's whips and Tackled its feet right from under it. Tangrowth went down.
Daisy stood watching Tangrowth, breathing hard.
"Tang..." said Tangrowth as it got to its feet.
"Tackle attack, Daisy... one more time!"
"Chika!" said Daisy, rushing in.
"Tickle attack, Tangrowth!"
Tangrowth extended its vines and as Daisy got close, started tickling her with them. Daisy started to laugh, forgetting she was supposed to be in a battle.
"Use Slam, Tangrowth!"
"Daisy, get away from Tangrowth!"
Daisy remembered herself and tried to get away but was caught by a hard flail of the vine, sending her flying. She flipped in the air, landing hard on her feet.
"Finish it off! Ancientpower!"
"Tangrowwwwwwwwwth!" said Tangrowth, powering up and sending its hardest barrage of orbs.
"Chikaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" said Daisy and again the leaf on her head glowed with a green energy before she fired off another windy vortex of leaves.
The two moves missed one another, hitting both pokemon simultaneously.
When the smoke cleared, both pokemon were down and out.
"Chikorita and Tangrowth are both unable to battle! This match is a draw!" declares the ref.

"Wow! A tie!" said Cassie. Then she smiled, "it was a good battle."

Mallory walked over and picked up Daisy who was still groggy. "You were great, Daisy."
"Chika," Daisy smiled weakly.

The boy returned Tangrowth to its pokeball. "Wow... that was intense," he said thoughtfully.

The watching school children were cheering the results of the battle. Since neither had really won... both sets of rooters were happy. Many of them would be pokemon trainers in the not so distant future.

Cassie was smiling and looking at the kids. "I didn't notice them watching before now. What a great audience," she said. She looked at Vic, "What do you say to our battle being out here where they can watch? We can be the main event." Cassie smiled... she's participated in tournaments so her pokemon were used to a cheering audience.

Vic was amused and pelased by the battle. "A good match, very intensely fought between two fine grass types."
The gym leader turned her attention to the school children, and called one of them--a first grader who was spending time with his third-grade friends.
"Jason, come here dear."
The beautiful little boy came running towards her, and she picked him up, giving him a kiss on the cheek and hugging him close.
"Cassie, Mallory, I'd like you to meet my son Jason. His father and I had... problems. So I happily aise him alone."
She set her boy down, then gave Cassie a wicked grin. "I suppose it would be nice. I could use a little fresh air anyway, after being in that meeting for hours."
She gave the Ultra Ball containing Prometheus--the lad's occassional babysitter and guardian--to Jason and sent him back over with his friends.
She squared up, facing Cassie. "Very well then, I accept your challenge."

"Yes, it was. I wonder what that was that Daisy used a couple times," she said thoughtfully. She then stood up as Vic did and called one of the boys over. Cassie smiled at the boy. "Hello there, Jason," she said smiling. Gintama came to her trainer's side and sat quietly... giving that wise elegance quality that an Espeon has. She looked quietly over at Herme.
Mallory also came over, still holding the bruised Daisy. "Nice to meet you, Jason," she says.
The gym trainer also came over and bowed to Mallory, a good sportsman. "Mallory, that was a great battle. Especially when it came down to our two grass types. Daisy's pretty tough. Your other pokemon were great, too!"
Mallory smiles, "Thanks. You should be proud of your pokemon, too." Mallory then looked at Vic and Cassidy, "now it's their turn. this should be interesting." Mallory and the boy moved to the sidelines and sat down so the next battle could begin. She kept Daisy in her lap.
Cassie looked into Vic's eyes and smiled... a spark was in her own. She was ready. This is what she came for. She went and took her place at one end of the battlefield....where her sister stood just moments ago. Now it was her turn.
"I'm ready," she said and waited for the referee to declare the rules.

"So am I." Vic said, smiling. She had dropped the sweet expression she'd had when holding her son, and put on her game face.
She produced her first pokeball, tossing it up and catching it gently.
"The match will be five-on-five, anything goes single battle."
Vic grinned. "I don't use Prometheus in gym battles--for fairness's sake. You alright with that?"

Herne was excited, but he obediantly sat on his haunches behind his mistress, awaiting his turn. He looked over at Gintama, and smiled.
In his dialect, he called to her, "No hard feelings if we go against each other?"

Cassie shrugged. Hmmm... five on five, she thought. This was going to be a long battle. She nodded at the terms, though. "Fine with me. I'm ready," she said and held her first pokeball.

Gintama looked across at Herne. "Of course," she says with a wink. "And no hard feelings if I beat you," she says with a touch of sass.

Herne grinned, and waited to see the match. "None whatsoever."

"Good luck." Vic said, full-heartedly as she sent forth her first comrade. She tossed the pokeball into the ring, and from it emerged a Lucario.
"Loren, I hope you're well-rested."
Loren smiled and gave his mistress a nod, then focused his intelligent gaze on the other end of the arena.

Cassidy looked across the battlefield at the Lucario. She hadn't been to Sinnoh, yet, so she'd never seen one. She looked it up in her pokedex.
"Lucario, the Aura pokemon. By catching the aura emanating from others, it can read their thoughts and movements," said the Pokedex.
Cassidy hmmms, looking at Lucario's types. "Canth would love this kind of opponent," she remarks and switches pokeballs. She tosses it out, "Canth, let's win this together!" she said and from the pokeball emerged a Charmeleon that she'd gotten in a trade a long time ago when it was still a Charmander.
Canth glared across the arena at the Lucario. "Char," he said... ready to go.
Cassie wanted to come out strong and that meant drawing out Canth's full power. "Canth, use Sunny Day!" she ordered.
"Chaar!" he responded and sent an orb into the sky... all clouds around the sun vanished and the sun beat down onto the battlefield... which would power up Canth's fire type moves.
Cassie also wondered how well a steel type like Lucario could stand the heat.

Loren flicked his ear, but kept calm, using his Aura to 'feel' out his opponant. His Inner Focus kept him from being daunted by the prospect of battling a fire type.
He and his mistress awaited the referee's announcement;
"THe match between Loren and Canth will now begin." the referee looked once mroe to both combatenets, then raised his flags. "Start!"

"Shatter the ground beneath Canth's feet, Loren,"
The lithe creature sprang up, then came back down with a growl, slamming into the ground and producing a vicious Earthquake attack, ever alert, his Aura ever recalculating.

Cassie was surprised by Earthquake but not unprepared. She'd faced something like this in a tournament before.
"Okay, Canth! Ride that earthquake and use Flame Charge!" Cassie ordered.
"Char!" said Canth and was suddenly surrounded in flames. As the earth began to shake, Canth took off running. As the ground split beneath his feet, he leapt from upheaval to upheaval running faster and faster at Loren inside a ball of fire. Canth did take some damage from the Earthquake... but not as much as he would have had he stayed still.

Vic narrowed her eyes. "Excellent manuvere, Cassie."
Then she issued another order;
"Rise up and avoid it, and use Aura Sphere."

Loren did as he was told. He used the disturbance of the ground, combined with the heat of Canth's attack--which he narrowly avoided as he rose--Loren generated a magnetic field that sent him several feet into the air--his Magnet Rise tecnique. This was where he countered with his Aura Sphere, locking in on his target's energy and firing.
The sphere was massive--this was a well practiced Lucario, and his attacks were, usually, devestating. In fact, as the sphere sailed through the air, it bacame even larger than Canth.

Canth looked up awwed by the sphere coming right at him. Cassie was impressed... that Lucario was very well trained. She had an idea and timing was going to be critical. "Canth, quick use Dragon Rage!"
"Char!" Canth blinked and bellowed out a large ball of flaming raging energy right at the Aura Sphere. The two attacks met in an explosive collision. Canth was pushed back a bit from the force but he dug in to stay on his feet.
"Canth, use Dig!" said Cassie.
Canth dove into the ground before the smoke had cleared from the colliding attacks. When the smoke cleared away, there was only a hole where the Charmeleon had been.
Cassie had to wait for her next move... expecting Loren to use Earthquake... since its power was magnified on a pokemon using Dig. However, the Lucario would have to come to the ground to use that move and that's when she would make hers. She watched Loren keenly... she and Canth would have to be in perfect sync.

It was a good idea on Cassie's part, to be sure. However, Victory had seen it a few times before. So she had one of her own.
"Loren, come down with another Earthquake,"
And so he did. He knew her plans already and readied himself for the order he knew was coming next.
At the very last minute, Vic issude the strategic order.
"Dodge his Dig with Extremepeed, then use earthquake away from him!"
Loren called back his compliance, just before sensing Canth's attack and doing just as Vic had commanded, skirting away in time--though he did take a moderate dose of damage from the close proximity--with Extremespeed, then crashed into the ground again with another, more devestating Earthquake technique.

Jason jumped up and whooped as he he cheered for his mother and Loren. He'd only gotten to see bits and pieces of Vic and her team in action before, so seeing it in full this time, right here right now, was an incredible joy for him.

Cassie watched Loren's every move as the Lucario came down to use Earthquake.
"Now, Canth! Come out with a Flame Charge!" Cassie commanded.
Canth erupted from the ground beneath the Lucario like a fiery rocket, aiming straight at Loren. It was a combination they'd been practicing to add a fiery punch after using Dig.
It was hard for Cassie to tell how much damage the move did to Loren before the Lucario used Extremespeed to get away.
"Vic, you've really raised your Lucario well! Canth, keep up the pressure! Use Flamethrower before Loren can complete that Earthquake!" orders Cassie.
Canth landed and whirled quickly. Loren was fast, though, and Canth saw the Lucario strike into the ground. Canth braced himself on all fours as the ground shook. He kept his focus, though, and unleashed a powerful flamethrower at Loren. (remember Sunny Day is still in effect)
Canth was starting to tire, though. He'd taken damage from 2 earthquakes and some collateral from the aura sphere.
When the ground started shaking, Canth stood up on his feet... refusing to quit.

Loren cried out as the flame hit him full on, and he was sent hurdling to the end of the ring, only to crash into a slab of earth that had been pushed up by one of his earthquakes.
He shuddered on the ground for a few moments, and was just about to give in, when his resolve changed. He rose to his feet on shaking knees, then flicked his ear back to his mistress, who'd been preparing to call him back as the judge had begun to raise his flag.
"Give me one more shot. I can defeat him." he said in his telepathic voice, to Jason's surprise, and to Victory's.
The gym leader hesitated, then looked across the field at Canth and Cassie. "....Alright then. Take one more shot at him with your Aura sphere."
And so he did, powering up again, and launching once more the massive ball of energy across the field, before passing out in exhaustion.

Cassie looked on with intense interest. She had her fists clenched as she'd watched Loren sail through the air after being hit by that flamethrower. She was amazed when the Lucario got to his feet... though barely. Cassie didn't understand why the judge didn't call Loren out but it was his call.
Cassie watched as Loren powered up another Aura Sphere and sent it hurling towards Canth.
"Canth, flamethrower at full blast!" she ordered.
"Chaaaaaaaaaaar!" Canth said and belched out a flamethrower with all the power he could muster with the time he had... The aura sphere hit the flames but had gotten very close to Canth before the two attacks resulted in an explosion.
Cassie waited with baited breath for the smoke to clear. As the smoke thinned out with the wind, Canth was on one knee and breathing hard.
