Adriana nodded. "I don't blame him," she replied softly. "Lets take of some of the layers and take her outside." She would work hard at helping Annora. If Alec didn't like her helping, she wouldn't back down.

Martha smiled, it seemed that Adriana might just be the ticket to healing the poor babe. She was nervous not knowing what Alec would say though, but she knew he would do anything to make his daughter well. She knew that he loved her but was afaird to get attached.

Martha nodded. "I think that would be good, but not too many layers off, after bing in the warm room her body might find the air a bit chilly" Martha paused "If it pleases you mi lady"

"Aye ofcourse, that would be wise," Adriana replied with a smile, she walked over to Martha. "perhaps we can also prove that she isn't taken over by demons." slowly, she started to peel away the layers from the child, somehow manuvering it in a way that she didn't drop Annora.

"They just say demons are needing to be let out, when she does the screaming , for she is not herself." Martha sighed. "I just want the babe to get well, we all do, Alex refuses to fix the rest of his castle, well apart from Annoras room, and the common areas, and our quarters" She whispered "His room is not fixed up, its like he is punishing himself"

She started to help Adriana take off the layers and they found a rash. "I am not sure what that is, at first I thought it was just a heat rash, but the docs said its a rash that kills...I dont know"

"I do not understand, babies are so innocent." it seemed so strange to assume Annora had demons just because she screamed. "what happened to his castle? And his room?" she asked softly.

Seeing the rash, she looked at it, and frowned a bit. "do you put stuff on the rash? Was the rash always there, or after so many layers was put on her?"

Martha shook his head "I dont get it either, just repeating what been told" She sighed and watched her take off the layers. "It comes and goes, I snuck her some cows milk onces, and the rash went away and she was actually awake and alert and even eating broth again, the doc came and ordered her back on goats milk, I tired to explain that it was making her ill, but it wasnt my place"

She shook her head. "No mater what time what we put on it she screams and then it spreads"

"Perhaps she needs cows milk, instead," Adriana replied softly. She took off another layer of blankets, but left on one that would keep the child from getting cold. "I'll help try to get her better." Adriana would even take it a step further, and get Alec to love his child.

Martha smailes. "Purhapes our Larid will listen to you, if its nottoo bold I think he is liking you" She blushed when she said it. "Please dont say anything, it is not my place I am comfortable with you so I fear my tongue is a little more lose"

She sighed "I do think the child needs a woman touch, I mean we all love her, but we were warned not too get too close, Alex will switch us out if he sences us getting to close to her, he fears we will be deppressed ifshe" She couldnt say the word. "I think that has somthing to do with it too, young babes need to be touched and Alex fears that if we hold her, we get attached, but I ask you, with a face like that how can we help but be too attached"

Adriana blushed a bit when Martha claimed that Alex is liking her. "I do not know, he is so gruff with me." She smiled softly. "Do not worry, I can keep a secret."

"That is sweet of him, wanting to protect your hearts should things get worse." But it wasn't good for him to lock his heart away, out of reach from his daughter who was in need of it. All children needed to know they were loved, even if they were dying, they should not die alone. But Adriana refused to let this child die, and she would try everything she possibly could to help her. Even if it meant clashing with the doctor, or Alec. "She is adorable, isn't she? I won't let him switch you, or anyone, because the child should know she's loved."

Martha smiled she had a feeling Adriana liked Alec just as much but she didnt say that of course. "Laird Alec is always a bit gruff, he wasnt always, but he still blames himself for his wife's death...so I guess this hardness is his protection"

"Annora doesnt seem to like all the change, so I am happy that you agreee that she should have one person with her, she really likes you" Martha said softly. "She is a sweet heart, and when she is well she is even more so" She paused "Last time she was well she begged for a cat she wants something with her bed, but the doc said that would make her worse, you are more leanred then me, is that true"

Adriana studied the sweet child. Already, she adored Annora, and wanted nothing bad to happen to her, ever. "I do not know about that. I heard that a cat steals the breath from a sleeping babe, but I do not believe in superstitions. Perhaps we can have a stuffed bear or something made for her. And perhaps, we can have a nice dog and cat visit her every now and then. Mayhap they would be soothing to her."

"The cat seems to be drawn to her, and like I said the nightmares stay away when the cat is near, but I am the only one that see it as that. But I do suppose the cat could smother her"

Martha smiled again "That would be good"

Suddenly there was a noise at the doorway and Martha turned and bowed. "My Laird, welcome home"

Alec was standing there, his legs braced apart his hands clapsed behind his back, "Martha you are excused" His voice was sharp. Martha raced out of the room and Alec turned to Adriana, after seeing the child uncovered he grew angry.

"Why is she" He as carful not to use her name "Undressed, the doctor said we must keep her covered and in a warm room"

Adriana turned to him when he sent Martha away. She saw his anger. "must she? She doesn't need to be do covered that she's practically burning up. Look, she's calmed down since being held and even more so once all but one blanket was off her. You can't fight her sickness by smuthering her with all this heat." the Laird did not frighten her, and she would fight him for the sake of the child. "I would never hurt her."

Alec raised an eyebrow when she challenged him. No one had done that before. "It is what the doctor ordered, she has to sweat out what ever is ailing her" Alec had to admit that Annora was doing better since Adriana had done what ever she was doing.

He stood there. "Be careful dont get attachted" There was sorrow in his eyes he reached out as it to touch the child and Annora smiled slightly. Alec then recoiled and walked away shaking his head.

Adriana watched him, a bit glad that he did not argue with her. "sweating it out makes her too hot. She needs to be able to breathe." he didn't want her to get her too attached, and that hardly made sense to her why he wanted every one to distance themselves from Annora. Walking after him, she frowned at him. "I will get attached to her, someone should love her."

Alec stopped when he heard her coming but didnt turn around, by her footstepts he could tell that she carried Annora. He shook his head "The doctor says that was what we are to do, but since I havent called for him yet, I will give you a little while to try your way"

He was about to walk away again when she uttered her next words. He turned on her and glared at her then looked down to Annora. "She knows that I do" Then he stormed off and went to his private room and began to drink.

Adriana sighed and craddled Annora close to her. How would a child know that her father loves her when he is always storming off. "don't worry little one, I'll find a way to make him change," she promised. "but for now, we'll go outside and get some fresh air." he gave her permission to try her way. That only meant no arguing with him, but even if he didn't let her help, she'd do it anyway. Because she was stubborn. Walking slowly, She headed toward the doors that led outside.

Little Annora had opened her eyes to the sound of his voice. And reached out to his retreating back. She then looked up at Adriana with her big blue almost purple eyes looking up at her. "Da?" She said softly. She then snuggled into the womans arms and held on to her as if she feared Adriana would disaperre if she let go of her.

When they made it outside Annora blinked in the sun. And cowered in Adriana's arms as she was afraid that something bad would happen. A young child came up and looked up at Adriana "Is that Annora?" The girl shook her head. "We be told her skin would blister in the sun" Annora whimpered and cowered more. This of course was another lie.

"Don't worry little one." Adriana held Annora close. the child was so adorable. When they were outside, Adriana looked to Annora as the little one cowered into her. "Its okay. This will be good for you." Her gaze shifted to the young child who came up to her. "This is sweet Annora." Hearing the question, Adriana frowned. Did the Doctor want Annora to just be locked away, forever? "Don't be silly. She'll no more blister than you and I. This will help her, rather than hurt her."

Annora again seemed comforted by her words again she nodded and then looked at the other little girl then up at Adriana, she turned slightly. But stayed in her arms, although she was old enough to walk, having spent most of her life trapped in bed she didnt have much time to learn to walk or do normal things. The doctor had forbade her from being active.

The other little girl smiled. "I be Catherine I be this many" The little girl held out 4 fingers.

"A pleasure to meet you, Catherine," Adriana replied with a smile. "Have you met Annora before?" Did the doctor even allow Annora to have any socialization? She felt so sad for this child, who was kept so isolated, so trapped.

The little girl smiled. "We be close in age...we used to play, until the doc" She stopped short and shook her head "Dont tell him I said anythign" She looked around as if she was scared the doctor was going to appear out of thin air. "Make her well, then the doc wont have to come here anymore"

Then she was gone. Everyone in the area looked at Adriana then Annora, all were thinking the same thing, if she got well the doc wouldnt have to come anymore.

Adriana nodded. She would do her best to make Annora well. She had read several books when she found out her friend was pregnant, books on midwife's, and books other books on healing. When Catherine left, Adriana took the young child in her arms for a walk.

Slowly Annora lifted her head and looked around. Her eyes were big as sausers as she took in all the sites. She still held herself close to Adrianna but pointed to everything. It was clear that although she spoke a little she didnt have many words, and didnt know what everything was.

She was too small for her age and was behind in normal things kids her age were doing.

Alec watched from his room and sighed. He had promised his wife that he would take care of Annora, but how could he handle losing someone else that he loved. The doctor was surpised each time he came that she was still living.

He had just sent word that the doctor was no longer needed. The doctor just recived notice and was livid. He knew that Annora only needed one or two more doeses of the poisin that he was giving to her before she died, then the clan that he had made a deal with would attack when Alec and his clan was mourning, just like they did when his wife had died.

Adriana smiled softly, glancing to the things Annora pointed at. She told what each thing was. She took Annora to some lovely flowers, to show her the beauty of life.
