Dustin knew his sister had heard him from the smile on her face and he decided to tempt fate and attempted to sit up. Dani raised an eyebrow but when he successfully got into a sitting position and looked as if he was about to try to stand up Dani was nearly flew to his side and laid him down. Talking in her very stern voice. “Dustin Todd Blodgett what did I say?”

“Awww sis would you really shoot your brother?” Dustin was grinning looking over at Alex as if proving that his sister was nuts. She was now standing between them both still acting as if she was a mother hen, well more like a mother bear.

“I will and you know it” Dani replied looking at both her brother and Alex in turn she sighed. Then turned to Dustin “You two scared the living daylights out of me. You know what I thought when I heard my name being requested at the door” She paused a tear escaping her eyes. “I thought I had lost you, when I found you that you had been captured I made plans to come” She lifted up her arms “I got all the shots at once, was the only civilian on the airplane, and as soon as I got here Alex took off to find you”

She paused and the turned and looked at Alex “ And don’t think for one moment that you are off the hook” She glared at him “ I am grateful you brought my brother back to me but did you have to play the hero role? Your squad probably thinks I am nuts they get introduced to me while you are playing GI JOE and running around like a mad man” She shook her head “Its either crazy or heartless for of course I remained strong for you I knew that you would come back for it you didn’t I would have killed you with my bare hands”

She would have continued with her rant but she heard someone at door and felt Alex squeezing her hand. She looked up at them and clenched her jaw she had half the mind to yell at them but she knew better. She swallowed hard and squeezed his hand back and stood there ready to defend her fiancé and Dustin if it came to it. She had seen Alex’s squad and wondered if they thought of her as heartless or crazy for watching the fire fight ensure then yell at them both.

Standing there she waited to see what they would have to say. She was ready to fight for her brother and Alex not to be court-martialed or kicked out of the service. Both had done their duty above and beyond and she would make sure they knew it.

Alex's squad came forward to stand beside his bed, they had already been introduced to the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister's grandson, Abram Nigic came forward to say hello to Dustin. To have so much brass there in one room, did not seem to bode well. Alex was worried, but things did not go as he feared. The Prime Minister stepped forward and introduced himself. "The whole world has witnessed your actions today. Helping those people escape the insurgents, and then putting your own life on the line to give them time to get to safety. You did not care if they were not who they were, you saw them as people in need of help and you helped. " he began.

"My grandson here was a part of that group of people. Your sefless actions saved his life and kept him out of the hands of those that would have used him to do great harm. I am in your debt." he gave a slight bow, "You and your brave men will always be welcomed here any time."

The General came forward, looking at Alex and the squad. He smiled, "Don't worry you are not in trouble. Though the circumstances surrounding the rescue is quite coincidental, your account of it is now the official way it happened." Looking back at the Company commander, "And do not worry about the rescue operation. The Prime Minister has authorized the rescue. There will be no actions taken against anyone, not even a anotation in their records. As a matter of fact young man." he turned to Alex again. "Your actions and that of your squad have been noted and recommended for medals."

Turning to Dani, "You must be Dani Bloddget." he continued to smile. "You have quite the soldier here and also one in your brother. We will be sending these two back state side along with these men." he nodded to the squad. It seems All of America is wanting to see thier heros."

Alex was about to protest but the general raised a hand to stop him and gave him a stern look. "That is an Order Sergeant." and then he grinned. "But don't worry you will be back." he then turned with the Prime Minister and left, leaving the Company Commander and Alex's squad members there.

Still holding on to Alex’s hand tightly Dani watched as the men entered, wondering just how much of her little lecture did they all hear? If they heard any of it they would most likely deem her as crazy herself. For it would be the 2nd lecture of both of them. And the 2nd time she had threaten to shoot her own brother. She could only guess what they thought of her.

It did seem however that they did not hear it, or wish to ignore it by their stance Dani could tell that they would not bring that up, at least not right now. Dani eyed each of the men in turn. Some she recognized from the live feed, so she figured those were fine, what was better was that they were not the ones that were witness to her shameful display in the room her disgraceful collapse that she was beating herself up over.

She was willing to fight for both her brother and Alex. She was beginning to feel closed in she could feel her breathing becoming more erratic and she was feeling light headed but her fear and worry was really for nothing. She stood straighter as the Prime Minister spoke. Her smile was broad she was very proud of her brother and Alex. She brought his hand to her lips and kissed it softly. Of course she was keeping an eye out for her brother as well.

When the General came forward Dani squeezed his hand letting him know that she was still there. She sighed in relive to hear that her Alex was not in trouble. It felt as if a elephant had been lifted from her shoulders, Alex and Dustin were not going to be court-martialed she couldn’t help but smile down at his stunned look.

When the General turned his attention to her it was her time to get a stunned look but quickly remember who he was she stood straight as she could still holding Alex’s hand. “That would be me General” She answered then nodded “I am very proud of both of them” She said with tears in her eyes “And I know our father is proud of Dustin, and Alex’s father is proud of him” She grinned “Very proud”

At the word of them going home Dani’s eyes went big. She had just gotten here, but she knew that neither of them would let her stay here alone so she would be going home, but she would find some way to return, she knew Alex and Dustin would both want to come back and she would be coming back as well.

Alex relaxed once the general left. The company commander smiled and shook his head. "Back one day, and you make the headlines all over the world." Again he shook his head, "And shook up the entire chain of command all the way to the Commander and Chief." he then chuckled. "Not to bad SGT Morgan." he then turned and left Alex and his squad with Dani. Alex looked up at Dani and then brought her down to him and kissed her.

"I didn't mean to do all that." he said softly. Dustin laughed out loud as did the members of the squad. "Well Sarge, you opened one hell of a can of worms on this one." They pulled up chairs around his bed. They looked over at Dani and shugged their shoulders. "Well he got us all a temporary vacation from this place." the Corpral chuckled. "Be great to see my wife and little one." the other's nodded,. They had family back home that they would love to see and that would love to see them right then. It was then that the Doc approached and put his hands on his hips.

"Well you all have better leave and let these two get their rest." he turned to Dani, "Miss Bloddget you can stay here if you wish. There is a bunk in a private area that you can have." he knew she would want to be close to both Alex and Dustin, and then of course she would be close if the other two patients need help. "I suggest you get some rest also young lady." he then shooed the squad out of the tent.

Alex sighed shaking his head. "All this hopla over doing what we were sent here to do." To him it still was nothing big. But to everyone else it was. Yes they put thier lives on the line each time the got into a fire fight, but it was not holding off a numerical superior force while others could escape, and killing so many in the process. Alex finally had to close his eyes. The stuff they had used to knock him out and then trying to get up and move around had taken its toll. Reaching up he caressed Dani's cheek. "See you in the morning. He finally slipped off to sleep.

Still standing between Alex and Dustin her head flipping back and forth like spectators at a tennis match. But she was beginning to relax as they both relaxed but she was still clearly worried about both of them. Her attention was drawn to Alex as he pulled her down and kissed her. Even with the audience Dani returned the kiss passionately and smiled into his eyes. “I do love you Alex Morgan but if you think I am letting you out of my sight you are sorely mistaken” She looked at the other men “And I believe the same will be true for all of you, be it wives, girlfriends, mothers you are all in for a nice lecture when you get home” She looked at her brother “And just because I gave you one don’t think Debbie will let you off the hook” She turned to Alex with a proud smile. “You may not have meant to do all of that but you did” She brought his hand to her lips and kissed it. “And thank you for saving my brother” She looked at all the squad “Thank you all”

She noticed the doctor and had to stiffen a giggle as he stood there with his hands on his hips. She nodded as the doctor gave her instructions, although she had no plans to move any further then where she was she agreed mainly for Alex and Dustin’s’ benefit “Thank you doctor I shall” She nodded her head to Alex’s squad. “Good night then” She said as the squad filled out. Alex looked so tired she grew worried about him.

As his caressed her cheek Dani had to fight back a tear of relief “I will be here my love” She whispered then as he feel asleep she bent down and gently kissed him then pulled up the covers to tuck him in. Then she turned to her brother and helped him into bed and tucked him in too.

“Sis you don’t have to do this” He stated but he was too weak to fight her off. Dani just smiled
“Dustin just let me, you know I am going to do it anyways so you may as well just let me” She finished tucking him in and smiled “I am happy you are save bro now get some sleep” She then moved to her seat between the two and relaxed planning on sleeping here in case anything happened.

She had fallen asleep and she didn’t know how much time had passed but she was awoke by screams. She sat upright, her brother and Alex were okay and she then realized where the noise was coming from. She stood and walked quickly to the separation. Nurses stood there with meds and Dani rushed forward

“Please let me try something” The nurse raised an eyebrow but the doctor who had come rushing too nodded

“Let her try it”

Dani took a deep breath and stepped forward to the one that was screaming. Caught in a nightmare forced to relive the event that landed him here over and over again.

“GET DOWN, I’LL GET TO YOU” Dani looked him over she knew that she couldn’t get into bed with him like she had down to Alex. The man was trashing back and forth and was crying now “I’m sorry I’m sorry” he kept repeating. Dani slowly reached out and grasped the mans hand.

“I know you are sorry, and they forgive you, you did nothing wrong it wasn’t your fault.” The man continued repeating that he was sorry and Dani moved her hand to his face and with the back of her had touched his face. “They do not blame you, you have to believe me” She continued to speak to him softly hoping that she was getting through to him. The man turned into her touch.
“I wasn’t quick enough, I was too slow I hesitated” Dani continued to stroke his check trying to calm him down.

“You are not to blame” His breathing was calmer and the man slowly fell back to sleep, he didn’t seem to ever fully awake so Dani knew it would be a long night but Dani turned to the doctor “Doctor I don’t know if its due to the nightmare but he is burning up”

Dani stepped back and waited to see what the doctor was going to say. The second man had been awoken by his screams and motioned for Dani. He spoke softly as if ashamed of what he was going to say.

“I know you are engaged but…” He looked down ashamed. “I will hold your hand until you fall asleep” Dani whispered. “And I will stay here for as long as you need”

The Doc went to another off shoot of the large tent that was his office/sleeping quarters. He did not like being to far away from his patients, especially the two he had in the other ward. They had been having nighmares, trouble sleeping, being irritable and of course didn't want to talk about anything. The directive had come down to use a certain drug to help them sleep. It was a powerful one and could be dangerous. It didn't seem to help. He had gotten ahold of Alex's medical records. He had been sent home because of a flap over him not graduating high school, and he knew that he had been as bad as the two in the ward.

But he did not seem like the other two, he looked and seemed as if he had no signs of PTSD. He also had made a call back to the states when he arrived and he had went over his medical records. There had been no mention of anything wrong with him in his new records. The VA center in his home town had told him that he had showed remarkable improvement after he had met Dani. They also told him that she had come to work at the VA center and had a knack for helping soldiers returning from Iraq and Afganistan. That was why he had taken her to see the two soldiers. He had seen her at work and he liked what he saw. She had gotten their attention and that was a good start.

It was not to long after he had laid down to get some rest when one of the soldiers began screaming in his sleep. He was up and running but not as fast as Dani had been. She was already in there and he had to smile. He waved the medics away and let her do her thing.

The man having the nightmare was again back in combat. They were taking heavy fire and RPG rounds were landing everywhere. The smells, sounds, everything was real to him. He was there. The insurgents were pounding them hard, after their vehicle had been hit by an IED. His buddy was down, bleeding not but a few feet from him, but he could not get to him. He was pinned down. His buddy was looking at him with pleading eyes. He didn't want to die. He watched him die slowly as he bleed to death. From his dead lips came the words, "You could have saved me."

He turned and twisted in his bed, sweating and jerking as his mind continued his nightmare. The second one woke up and saw Dani there and spoke to her. The Doc smiled more as she took the mans hand and told him she wold hould his hand until he fell asleep and be there. He figured that one would be talking pretty soon about what was bothering him. She did have a way with them. She was the medicine that they needed, not the drugs that were being prescribed. He instructed the medics on duty to give her anything she needed, then left her to do her magic.

Seeing the doctor come in and stand here made Dani feel a little encouraged so she wouldn’t be alone but he just stood there and watched. He made no move to do any intervening even when she commented on the first one burning up. The fact that he didn’t intervene and step in made her a bit nervous. He trusted her enough to let her do her thing he trusted her more then she trusted herself. What if she damaged these two more? They were not like Alex, he had been at home away from the sounds of the war the sounds of war was truly around them and just not in their heads.

She wasn’t sure she could deal with them. But it was just her self-doubt; she had the same feelings with Alex when she started with him. So she would just do her best. She didn’t notice the doctor leaving until she looked up and didn’t see him there but medics standing near by

“We were told to get you anything you needed” They spoke softly as if they were worried they were going to wreck what she was doing. Her story had preceded her and had spread like a wild fire, other bases wanted her to come. It seemed she was a present day Sidney Freedman*. Dani smiled

“Well maybe another water bottle for me, still not used to the heat” They nodded and brought her one out a fridge. Dani thanked them then went back to the second man who finally closed his eyes again. Once making sure that he was asleep she softly let go of his hand and went to the first one who was thrashing. She felt his forehead he was still too warm for her liking

“I need a cool cloth please” Immediately one was placed in her hands she brought it to the Soldier’s forehead and softly wiped it down. She softly spoke comforting words; it was all she really could do until she heard more of what he was saying there wasn’t anything she could do really. But she continued to spoke softly “Its Okay, they have forgiven you, I know you did nothing wrong and so do they” She continued to wipe down his face. Trying to bring down the burning of his face and stop the sweating. She worked through his thrashing. She had been through it with Alex but it had been easier with him, she could climb into bed with him. She didn’t think it would be appropriate to do so here. She wondered what hell these two had been through, and hoped that she could help them and get them to speak before they went home.

Dani knew she had a long night ahead of her, then she would have to fake a well rested face for Alex and Dustin who would have her head if they knew she had been up all night with these too then planned to be up all day with them then up all night again with these two. She took a small break and drank some of the water, knowing that if the doctor saw her get dehydrated she would be in the bed next to Alex. Then she turned her head to check on the second man then back to the first one to see how they were both doing.

The nightmare of the first soldier began to subside with Dani's soft voice and the cool cloth on his forehead. His breathing slowed and he stopped tossing about in his sleep. The nightnmare was over and other, normal dreams took over. The drug that was given to them to make them sleep, kept him asleep. It prevented him from waking during the nightmare. Now both were sleeping, easily. One of the medics came up and said. "You need to get some sleep. You will be no good to them or yourself if you don't. One of us will come get you if they have any more trouble sleeping.

Back home it was still unbelieveable what everyone had witness. No one had been able to tear themselves away from the TV's. Every second of the firefight was burned into the memories of everyone. The recruiter that had helped Alex get back in had watched and pride swelled up in him as he saw him rise from the first and then the second wound to keep on fighting. Their friends, the ones Dani and Alex had made soon after they had got together had watched hands clinched to things, their knuckles white. Every where in the town the people had watched and when Alex and his squad was rescued, a cheer went up that could be heard everywhere.

Now a few hours later people were talking about it and the media had invaded the town to talk to everyone they could. Alex's mother, Marry had talked to them but now police officers kept the reporters at bay so she could rest and have some peace and quiet. The recruiter had come over and using his connections kept her informed on how her son was doing. She laughed when told what Dani had told Dustin and Alex. The soldiers over there had talked to each other and he had gotten the story as well. "That is Dani." she said. "She will keep those two in bed and mending."

The VA doctor grinned when he talked to the Doc in Iraq. After he had left Dani with the soldiers, he had called him and they talked. "I told you she is good. She has a way about her that no medicne can duplicate. Keep those men off that damn drug and let her do her thing with them."

"So I shall. Though I don't think she will be her to much longer. Both Morgan and her brother will be heading back to the States in a couple days." the Doc said.

"In those two days they will be on the mend. Might take some more councling but they will be able to heal."

The Mayor had already made arrangements for Mary to go to Washington DC. Word had come down that Alex, Dustin and the Squad were going to be coming back first to DC then home. He was also arranging a welcome for Alex and Dustin.

Seeing that the nightmare had subsided Dani leaned back a little and relaxed things were going to be okay, she could do it here just as she did it at home. Stiffening a yawn she looked to the other resting one. The day had really taken a toll on her, she couldn’t believe all that happened today seeing Alex go through all that, nearly losing both Dustin and Alex then getting both of them back, and helping these two Soldiers, and jet lag was settling in. She looked at her watch, and realized she had not changed it to Iraq time yet. If she calculated it properly other then her short nap on the airplane she had been up for 36 hours. Alex was surly going to have her head unless she got some sleep but she couldn’t leave these two. She looked at the both of them and licked her lips.

As the medic walked up to her and told her to get some sleep she nodded. “I guess that would be best” She smiled wearily “I have been up for a while and with the time change I don’t even know what side is up” She looked up at the Medic “Just promise that you will come and get me if there is any change” She walked back pass the curtain to where Alex and Dustin were. After checking on both of them she sat on the floor and rested her head on Alex’s bed.

Two Medics coming in to check on Alex and Dustin’s vitals they noticed an exhausted Dani sitting on the floor by Alex nearly asleep. They quickly got a cot and while one lightly tapped her shoulder to which Dani jumped up thinking that she was needed again. The Soldier shook his head and silently pointed to the cot. Dani moved slightly for it to be laid down, it seemed they knew to put it right next to Alex, Dani nodded a Thank you wanting to stay quiet so not to awaken the sleeping Soldiers and then laid down next to Alex but not wanting to hurt him she made sure she had no weight on him. She wasn’t sure how tender he was so better safe then sorry. Leaning over slightly she kissed his lips very softly then she laid her head back down.

She quickly fell asleep, the long day and lack of sleep finally taking its toll. Next to Alex she slept soundly but did not need a blanket since it was too hot. She kept an ear out though for any movement either out of Dustin and Alex or the other two just on the other side of the curtain.

Back at home the news had reached Alex and Dani’s mother. She turned to her new husband as Dustin’s name was mentioned. “That is my son, stupid ass joined the army like his father, he is going to get himself killed” She smiled “and that means I get money about time! Todd willed all the money to the kids I got nothing, one of the reasons I left him during his second tour” She shook her head “This time I will make sure I get what’s coming to me” She was too drunk to drive so her new husband Frank drove for her the few hours to the old house but come to find out that they didn’t live there anymore. A neighbor directed her to the Morgan’s house. She recognized that name it was a blasted friend of her ex husband, and the fact that Dustin had enlisted was most likely their fault she was sure of it so she got back into the car and with a groan let Frank drive her to where the Morgan’s lived.

As soon as she got out of the car she noticed the media. But she didn’t want to answer questions, she knew she would be asked why she hadn’t been around and she didn’t want to answer those questions. She walked pass them and went to go pass a local police officer who stopped her “Listen I am Dustin Blodgett’s mother” The police officer asked for ID then walked her up to the front door and knocked. “Mrs. Morgan we have a Mrs Bloddget” She put her hand up “Brenda Davis please” The police officer glared at her. Already he did not like this woman, something wasn’t right. But before he could say anything the door opened and there stood Mary and she glared at Brenda “Come in” She looked at the police officer “You better come in to for her protection.”

Meanwhile a news reporter had over heard the comment and immediately spoke into the camera “It seems that Dustin Blodgett the Soldier that had been rescued mother had arrived, where she had been is not clear please stay tuned we will bring this development as it happens

Brenda walked in and looked around seeing her husband’s picture on the mantel with the flag she glared. Then turned to Mary and put on a fake worried look. “I just heard about my poor baby over in Iraq” She looked around “And you took on them, I do hope they were not too much trouble, Danielle is a little crazy, I actually considered committing her.” She shook her head “They were such a handful, Danielle a cutter, Dustin a sullen teenager I cant believe that Danielle burdened you with her garbage she was always a weak child”

Mary began to shake and turned to look at her. “Listen here, your daughter took over your roll, she kept herself and Dustin in school, for nearly a year hid the fact that you had left them, she did not even tell your husband about you leaving them, he only found out when he came home for his leave” Mary shook her head. “Your daughter was more of a mom to Dustin then you were” Brenda opened her mouth to argue but Mary lifted a hand to silence her. “You listen here, your son and daughter don’t need you, and I am a lawyer I am drafting a restraining order against you I know your agenda you are hoping to collect on any benefits, well I have you know, your son is alive, my son who is going to marry Dani, not Daniele she hates that name” Mary continued to shake with anger her voice eerily calm though her training as a lawyer coming in. “Dani is also in Iraq, she has a way with Veterans.”

Brenda flared up again “THEY ARE BOTH THERE??” She went to take a step forward and nearly fell over. Mary raised an eyebrow. “Officer this woman is drunk, please escort her from my property and do not let her come back, I will be drafting restraining orders in the morning” To one last time to Brenda she spoke “You really missed out Dani and Dustin are great young adults, but I will not have you upsetting them, Dani is happy and has not cut in months, she helped my son with PTSD issues, your son is serving his country he to is engaged” She paused “You will not hurt them again” With that she watched a fighting Brenda being escorted from her house and hoped and prayed that Dani and Dustin would not see or catch wind of this it would throw Dani throw a tailspin and she needed a clear mind right now.

((Not sure about this...you can add to Mary or the police officer maybe it does reach to Dani and she tries to protect Alex and Dustin who already heard it as well))

When Dani came to his cot, Alex woke up but did not let it show that he was awake. He kept his eyes shut and felt her put her head down on his cot and then heard the medics come and put a cot next to his and Dani lay down on it. He waited until he heard her breathing slowed and be came more rythmatic before opening his eyes and swinging his legs over the edge of the cot. He slowly stood up, feeling better then before, but with his wounds still hurting. They would of course continue to hurt until healed. Taking hold of the IV stand, he rolled it back into the other part of the tent where the two soldiers were.

He sat down in the chair that Dani had sat in and looked at the two. Both were having the same problem he had but only sooner. Both were blaming themselves for things they had no control over. He had learned that from the thyrapy he went through. Dani had helped quite a bit to calm him and come to terms with it. He had learned when it came your time to go there was nothing anyone could do to save you. They had to realize that. Again standing up he returned to the other side of the tent. There his duffle bag had been brought since he was soon to be returning to the States and his combat gear. Across the tent, Dustins stuff was there as well.

As he walked in, Dustin woke up and sat up. His arm was in a cast. Alex moved to his duffle bag and opened it pulling out boots, uniform pants and shirt. Pulling on the pants he sat down and put on his boots. The shirt would not be going on though, since he had the IV in yet. He didn't feel right not being with proper clothes on. Dustin was doing the same and had some trouble with his boots but got them on and laced up. Sitting back down Alex looked over at Dani and smiled. Then looked down at his things and saw a package there. Opening it he saw the tattered and dirty flag that he had raised at the fire fight. Some one had folded it neatly and wrapped it up and placed it with his things. He smiled again as he ran a hand over it.

That was when he heard it. The wissling sound of incoming. Suddenly the air was split by several thunderous explosions and the ground shook. There was no hesitation, Alex removed the IV and put his shirt on and then began putting on his body armor, helmet and load bearing gear. Across the room Dustin was doing the same. The uniforms were lose enough to allow him to put his shirt on over the cast and then put the sling back on after he got everything else on.

Being more tired then she thought she was Dani did not even feel or hear Alex get up. She had even fallen asleep in the full body armor that Alex had put on her. She was clearly exhausted, even her insomnia that she had when she first me Alex did not effect her. Between all that had happened and the jetlag she was overtired and was dead to the world. She moved slightly and sighed as Alex left the room but remained asleep.

She stirred as he came back and sat down on her cot but still remained asleep her body too tired to wake her up. She was dreaming of Alex and her on her wedding day, but Alex wasn’t the same, he was missing an arm and badly scared on the face, but it didn’t matter to Dani she loved him anyways. Their wedding day was prefect. Her father’s entire squad walked her down the aisle to her Alex who in her mind still looked handsome as ever. Both Alex’s squad and Dustin’s were there, Alex’s mom was beaming. Alex was in his dress uniform, and Dani was in a beautiful white dress everything was beautiful it was a prefect day.

All too soon her dream was over. The sounds woke her with a start and she gasped looking around it took a couple minutes for her to remember where she was She looked to Dustin and Alex seeing them getting dressed she immediately stood up the noises that had woken her up forgotten the sounds happening around her gone she was zoned in on these two “And where do you two think your going?” She had her hands on her hips and she tapped her foot glaring at both of them. “Get back into bed”

Alex was fully dressed and ready to go when Dani rose from the cot and tried to get them to get back in bed. He moved to her and took her into his arms. "This is what I do. The Base is under attack and might need every man to defend it. I can not lay here while the other soldiers put their lives on the line."

Dustin came up to her, "We are soldiers sis. Would you have us stay here and not support our fellow soldiers?"

Alex took Dani by the arm and began moving towards the tents entrance as more mortars came screaming in and exploded. Limping some he made his way towards the High Burm where defensive positions had been made for such things. On his way he saw Randy and his squad, they saw him and Randy tossed him a rifle. Dustin's squad was right behind them and his Squad leader tossed him one as he grinned. Most of the shells were hitting outside of the Burm. Here there were some areas where sandbags had been piled up and over corigated metal to form bunkers. Here Alex stopped and told Dani. "Please stay in here. You will be safe." He caressed her face as he and Dustin moved up to the top of the Burm

The reporter that had caught the Fire fight and had reported it was still there and as the mortor rounds came in he was there reporting it again. He had the camera man scan the compound showing the soldiers running to take up defensive postions, the small craters the explosions were leaving. Then he saw Alex, Dani, and Dustin and turned had his camera man turn the camera on them. "Heros can not be kept down. Sergeant Alex Morgan and from what this reporter has learned, Private Dustin Blodgett, the brother of Seargen't Morgan's fiance are all geared up and heading to defensive positions. As you know these two were injured earlier but that does not seem to keep them out of the action."

As Alex reached the top, he looked around and saw nothing out there. It was dark out and hard to see where the mortar tubes were. His squad took up positions on either side of him. Dustin and his squad took up theirs a bit further down. As he stood there, he realized he had brought the US flag with him. The one that flew over the compound had been lowered earlier and would be raised in the morning. Again he didn't know why he did it but he looked around, found some rope and threw it up over a pole that held a light that lit up the outside of the compound in that area. Tieing loops through the eyelets on the flag he raised it up to flutter in the slight breaze and tied it off. There was a loud "URAH" from every soldier along the entire circumferance of the Burm.

The reporter zeroed in on the flag. "He has raised the American Flag once again over his postion. This was his sign of determination earlier as he and his squad made a stand against overwelming odds. As you can hear, every soldier here is behind him. Night vision devices were being passed out to Squad Leaders. He took his and put it on and took a look out over the burm and saw a number of insurgents moving about the ruins of buildings not to far from the Compound. "Alright guys we have company coming." All along the burm the soldiers brought their weapons up and took aim out into the darkness.

Suddenly there was gunfire as the insurgents opened up. Bullets hit the sand bags and soldiers hunkered down, then poped back up to open fire. "Range, approximately two hundred yards." he told his squad and brought his weapon up and cut loose as everyone else began firing. As they began firing into the dark, the lights of the compound went out. It gave the insurgents a harder target to fire upon. Those with the night vision devices could see the enemy and direct the fire to those around them. The only light was the muzzel flashes of the weapons on both sides.

Even with the darkness the insurgents got lucky. Two men were hit badly and fell back and slid down the burm to land by Dani, one almost falling on her.

Blinking in confusion as he took her into his arms Dani looked up at Alex “Under attack?” She was clearly confused and not fully awake. She looked at her brother “I know what you are, I just” She shook her head refusing to go on she didn’t want to confess that she had woken up confused and hadn’t realized what was going on Alex would think for sure that she couldn’t handle it here and not allow her to come back which she was planning on. She had planned on asking the commander permission to come back. Instead she smiled “Of course, go play Rambo” She lightly punched her brother in the arm “If anything happens to you be prepared for another lecture” She glared at both of them, “that goes for both of you”

She allowed herself to be led outside, it was so dark, Dani could sense the fear in the air. She watched as both Alex and Dustin caught the rifles thrown at them. She was still hoping that this was all a bad dream the base couldn’t be under attack. But the noises that were all around her, mortars exploding, men yelling orders. She swallowed hard, this wasn’t going to end good, her dream came back to her. Alex without one of his arms and badly burned on his face. She had to push the images out of her mind Alex needed her to be strong right now.

As he directed her to stay there she nodded. As he caressed her face she smiled and kissed his hand. “I love you Alex” She looked up at him threw her arms around his neck and kissed him passionately on the lips pushing her tongue into his mouth and then breaking she put her forehead to his mouth. “Alex Morgan you come back to me you hear, I want my wedding” She then grinned. “Now get out there” She slapped him on the ass then watched him climb over the burm then stayed where he put her. She could hear the gunshots and the yelling and the orders. No wonder he had nightmares she thought to herself, she had a feeling that he would have them again. But she would be there for him always.

She heard a loud UHRAH rise out from the men and she saw Alex raising the flag. She had to smile at that. He was a stubborn man but she loved him. More gunfire happened and Dani covered her mouth to muffle her screams and hunched down trying to make herself small as target as she could, if anything happened to her she knew that both Alex and Dustin would risk their lives to save her and neither would ever recover from it.

When the power was cut Dani let out another muffled scream but understood that it was so the insurants wouldn’t be able to see them. But she also couldn’t see Alex or her brother seeing if they were okay. Sitting there in the dark was torture for her she felt helpless; there was nothing she could do.

Suddenly the two men fell down with one almost landing on her. Dani let out a surprised scream and scrambled backwards her body shaking. The two began to scream out in pain. Dani screamed for a Medic but her voice was drowned out by all the other noises. She knew that if she didn’t help these men they would die right in front of her and she couldn’t let that happen. Since both had landed in her protected area she only had to move herself a little. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath this is what she wanted to be able to help.

Reaching the first one she noticed a wound in the thigh acting quickly she looked him over. He looked at her and grasped her hand

“Please help him first he is worse off” He squeezed her hand Dani looked him over he was losing a lot of blood and with how bad off the second man was it might be a while that she would beable to tend to him. Without a second though Dani quickly tore his pants at the bullet wound and looked at him. “I might be awhile I am not going to clean it but I will stop the blood. Reaching into her pouch she pulled out a tampon and opening it she gently pushed it into the wound. “That will stop the bleeding for now” He looked a bit shocked but Dani had turned her back on him to check on the other male.

He was worse off, having a bullet wound in the chest. He was pale and shaking, she knew the signs of shock and quickly brought a hand to his face. “Hey I am Dani Bloodget bet you know me hey I guess I am famous around here” She smiled “I am going to help you okay” The man looked at her “Tell my wife I love her” Dani only shook her head “Listen to me you are going to tell her yourself and I suggest you do so with roses” The man raised an eyebrow
“You are a stubborn person” Dani smiled
“So I have been told” Dani ripped open the mans’ shirt and looked. One bullet wound. The man was talking so that showed a good sign. Reaching into her pack she grabbed a sanity napkin (pad) and opened it and placed it over the wound and pressed down. The man was losing a lot of blood but she knew that the maxi pad would absorb the blood while she applied the pressure she turned to the first man “How are you”

“Oh I am great I have been shot and now I have a tampon sticking out of my thigh” Dani had to chuckle

“Well it’s keeping you alive you can be embarrassed later” She turned the man with the chest wound. Checking him over for shock again. She hadn’t realized but she had both of their blood on her now. She hadn’t had time to put gloves on and both had bled on her clothes She checked on he wound. She noticed that he wasn’t getting much air it was flowing in and out of his wound even though she made no sign of it she simply smiled at the Solider “Its looking better.” I took a medical class my father made me he was in the Army too.” She took a sand bag and raised his legs. “Just keep talking to me okay?” Sh then reached into the medical kit that was on the Soldier and got a long bandage, reaching into her bag she pulled out three thick pads and placed them by the wounds then wrapped the long bandage around them being careful only to raise him a little bit to wrap them all around. “There that will be better” She then took off her jacket and covered the soldier since he was more likely to go in to shock.

The man turned to his buddy. “So you have a tampon and I have maxi pads stuck to me” Dani shook her head still trembling slightly. “Y..you two are just lucky I I I am here” She stammered out.

Then sitting between the two she started to clean around the thigh wound. The tampon was holding and was stopping the blood, but she knew both of these men would need medical attention from real doctors. Cleaning the first mans wounds caused more blood to come on her. She looked him over making sure he had no other wounds. She noticed then that the tampon was getting too much blood she would have to pull it out.

She looked at him. “Listen what I am about to do will hurt but I have to do it” The man nodded and Dani prepared a clean pad quickly pulled out the tampon and then firmly placed it on and held it there. She looked at him so she again didn’t realize the blood that she was getting coated in. Satisfied that the bleeding had slowed she put a new clean tampon back in the wound.

Suddenly there was a loud bang Dani quickly covered both mans wounds from the dust that flew up. She was now covered in dust and blood. She peered into the darkness wondering how much longer she had before the medic would be coming. She checked the vitals of both of them. The pulses of both were strong but the chest wound one was beginning to fall asleep. Dani lightly shook him. “Hey you two have to stay awake, keep me company” She tried to make it about her and not about if they fell asleep they might not wake up. She tired yelling for the Medic one more time.

If she had looked down at herself she would have been worried about what Alex would say. Blood covered her hands and arms her jacket was keeping one of the men from going into shock. So now her shirt was also covered in blood her pants as well. And dust. Her face had lost all colour seeing these two men get shot and land near her. And the fear of what she did driving the bullets in deeper and she had killed them. She was sitting there holding both of their hands and every few minutes she was checking on their injures and their vital signs. She hoped the firefight would soon so these two could get proper medical attention plus Dustin and Alex needed to go back to bed.

She didn’t realize it herself but she was showing a few signs of shock herself. She was trembling and her heart was beating quickly her face had lost all colour And although right now she was on an adrenaline rush it would soon end and she would fall hard. But for now her mind was transfixed on these two injured men half excepting more to fall on her.

Alex continued to direct the fire of his squad as did others around the perimeter. Insurgents fell everywhere. There must have been hundreds of them trying to attack the Battalion' compound. But after a few minutes they retreated back to the ruined buildings to hide. Alex had a feeling that the attack was in retalliation for thier earlier defeat by him and his Squad. They didn't have the equipment that the military did. But still from the cries for medics, he knew that some of they were getting a lucky and hitting some of men of the battalion.

In the lull he gave the night vision goggles to Randy and told him he was going down to check on Dani. As he decended he saw flashlights with the red lens moving back and forth through the compound. Medics running to help those that had been wounded and taking them back to the Medical Tent. Two approached the bunker that he had put Dani in and his heart began to pound as he franticly scrambled down the burm. He arrived at the same time the Medics did. He turned on his flashlight and saw Dani covered in blood. "Dani!" he called out and rushed to her. He looked at her and checked her over. "Are you hit, are you alright?" he looked quite shaken.

"Not her blood Sergeant." one of the medics said. "Its their blood. Good thing she was here, or these two may have bleed to death." Two more medics arrived with streachers and the two soldiers were taken away. Alex pulled her to him holding her tightly. Her covered in blood had scared him to death. He held her for a bit then pulled back looking at her and caressed the side of her face.

Even though it only was a few minutes Dani was feeling as hours were passing. She kept talking to the men. Trying to keep them awake and conscious and with her. She was sure that she was going to go deaf from all the sounds around her. She was certain her voice was horse from calling for medics but she didn’t care these guys needed proper medical attention.

She noticed the red flashlights and quickly grabbed the gun from one of the soldiers and pointed it towards the incoming light she was shaking heavily but prepared to shoot if it was an insurant. She dropped it down as soon as she saw the medics. They took one look at her and came towards her on shaky knees Dani stood “I’m fine help them” She spoke quickly “Gun shot to the thigh there is a tampon in the wound” She paused and pointed to the other “Gun shot to the chest” She would have gone on but Alex had appeared.

As he reached her she shook her head “I…I am not hit” She managed to get out wondering why everyone was concerned about her. She took a look as the men were carried away then clung on to Alex as he hugged her. “Alex you are okay” She hugged him close “I think I killed the one though, I didn’t take out the bullet I just put in the tampon to stop the bleeding” She looked at him as he stroked his cheek “I just wanted to stop the bleeding” Her eyes were full of fear as she threw her arms around his neck again she whispered into his ear “I love you Alex, I love you more then you know” She was shaking in his arms then kissed him softly. “I am okay” But her trembling voice betrayed her. “I am sorry I scared you, and sorry you had to go through this, no mater you had night mares” She kissed him again. She then looked down and finally saw the blood. “Oh man no wonder you were scared” She shook her head “I am fine really, just go finish playing Rambo then come back to me and you can show me where to have a shower” She winked “But don’t go thinking kinky on me” She pinched his ass again. “Really I am fine sweetie”

He could see that Dani was shaken by what had happened. Two soldiers had been wounded and had fell in to her lap as it were. That is something one not use to seeing the blood and see and hear men screaming and carring on as he imagined they had, would tramatize. She would remember her time in Iraq, that was for sure. It was alot different watching a battle take place then being in one. He hugged her one last time and told her, "Stay here and be safe." and made sure she was safely in the bunker before he climbed back up to the top of the Burm. He was going to have to spend some time with her to help her over what she had just been through. "No movement. Not sure what they will be trying now." Randy told him.

Alex could not understand why these insurgents obeyed those that so evidently corrupted the teachings of the Koran. Back at home the Iman's and followers of Islam were peacefull, and did not aprove of what the fanitical clerics in Iraq and Afganastan were preaching. How could people beleive those fanatics and go strap explosives to themselves and then go blow themselves up killing inocent men, women and children and injuring others. People that had never done them harm and were devout followers of Allah. His mind was going a hundred miles an hour and then he decided to do something. It was off the wall and completely outside the box. Especially for him.

There was a mic, connected to a loud speaker system, near him. He looked at it then up at the flag flying above him. Unscrewing the flashlight, he removed the red lens so that the white light would shine through, then put it back together. Laying it down on the sandbags, he aimed it up so that when he turned it on the light would light up the flag. He then picked up the mic and turned on the light. The flag was lit up and he pressed the mic key. "Remeber this flag." he began, "Only a few hours ago it flew over another battle, one where six US soldiers held off over 150 of your people. That was because Allah has abandoned you. He has condemed you all for your lack of faith in him and allowing false prophets to defame Mohamads teachings so they can put themselves above all others and think they are one with him. Where are these Clerics, these leaders that order you to do things that Allah has no wish for, to go against the teachings of the Koran, to kill and maime inocent men, women and children, true belivers and followers of Allah. You follow false prophets and Allah has damned you all to an eternity of pain and suffering. Those you have killed sit with him now, basking in his glory, while you and those that have fallen, following the false prophets now burn in Hell. How else can you explain how I and my squad was able to defeat so many of you and just as it seemed you would succeed, you failed by having us rescued. Allah has abandoned you and has condemed you all.

Where are your leaders, your false prophets? They hide while ordering you to your deaths. Where are they? Hiding in the city, or in a foreign country, away from the fight, away from any possible harm. Living in luxuary, having others wait on them hand and foot. You dare question them and they have you killed. They send you to your deaths, so they can retain their power over others. They do not want to give up their power. Ask them if you dare, to strap on a bomb and go detonate it and see what they say. They will tell you that they are to important to the cause, that who will lead you if they are dead. Look to yourselfs. How many of you have picked up where others have fallen. Taken charge when others wouldn't. These false prophets use you to keep them selves in power and do not wish to give it up and won't."

He knew he had repeated himself and didn't even understand why he had said the things he had. But there was no more incoming shells, no small arms fire. Then he did something that was completely against his training. He stood up and climped up to stand next to the pole that the flag few from. He looked out into the dark. The light from his flashlight illuminated him. Randy whispered. "Movement! Get down Sarge!"

"How many." Alex asked.

"One." Randy whispered.

"Hold your fire!" Alex called out. He licked his lips and looked around. He could barely see some of the soldiers to his right and left. They were all looking at him.

The company commander came up and looked up at Alex. "Sargent what are you doing?" he spoke in a command voice.

"A gut feeling sir." Alex replied. "Let me go with this sir. I don't know why, but I feel there is a chance here. A chance we might not get again."

The captain looked to his right then his left at the men there, then back at Alex. "Go ahead, but we will open up with everything we have and more at one sign of trouble. And Sargent, you don't go getting yourself killed. Hear me?"

Alex smiled and nodded. Then he slid down the Burm to the ground below, outside the confines of the Encampment. He began walking towards the lone insurgent, slinging his rifle across his back. The insurgent began walking towards him. Once they met both stopped. "So you are the one, the one that has been on the news." He looked Alex up and down. "You were wounded. One can not recover that fast."

Alex smiled, "You explain it." he replied. "If Allah was against me, I would not be here now. You call him Allah, we call him God. One in the same I think, we just have different ways of praying to him and some different beliefs. But if he did not want me to be here, I would be laying dead back there along with my entire squad."

The insurgent was a man in his thirties, in what looked to be an old Iraqie uniform with a checkerd scarf wrapped around his neck. On his back was an AK47 and he had a belt of ammunition with clips for it across his chest. He was unshaven and looked as if he had not slept for awhile.

As he hugged her that one last time she held on for as long as she could she wished he could stay with her but she knew that he had to finish the battle then they could be together and she could get the blood off of her and get both her brother back into bed, check on the two that she tended to and the two that she spoke with earlier. Watching him leave her again

Dani swallowed hard and began to wring her hands. She was going crazy in the bunker, not knowing how the two she tended to were doing. She didn’t know what was happening up on the burm. She needed to know something anything, and it was too dark to try to make her way back to the medical huts she decided to go to where Alex was.

Hearing Alex’s speech she moved out of the bunker and looked up where he was. She noticed the light up flag and she grew even more nervous. That was a sure way to attract fire. Was he nuts? She wanted to throttle him. He was going to get it when she got her hands on him again. She couldn’t really see up there it was too dark. But she could tell that he was up to something when he stopped talking. Without thinking and no full realizing what she was doing she quickly climbed the Brume.

Her brother hearing someone coming turned quickly with a weapon drawn, he immediately went to her and in a hushed whisper spoke to her “Dani Blooddget what the fuck are you doing” Dani turned to him.

“Where is Alex” A few of the guys then noticed her and began whispering and the company commander turned to her
“Get down” Dustin quickly flattened her.
“Sis” He whispered in her ears “Keep quiet” When Dani began to again demand where Alex was Randy spoke in a harsh whisper that chilled Dani to the bone. “It could mean Alex’s life”

Dani swallowed hard and looked to either side she was now being flanked by all sides. Her brother on one side Randy on the other side both of them grabbed a hold of her arms so there was no chance that she could bolt even if she wanted to. Randy handed her the night vision goggles

“Only if you are good and don’t charge after him” Dani nodded took them and aimed there where Dustin pointed. She let out a low gasp

“What does he think he is doing?” Forgetting her promise she went to stand and chase down to where Alex was. Both men tightened their grip on Dani. She wasn’t going anywhere. She tried to break free of them both but they both where too strong. She collapsed onto the ground as the tears began to fall. She handed the goggles back to Randy the tears blocking her vision. She made no attempt to whip away the tears as Dustin noticing something wet looked at his hands just enough light to see red he grew worried.

“Sis your covered in blood” He whispered. Starting to check her over for wounds Dani shook her head and pushed him away, her tears coming stronger now. Remembering the two soldiers she thought she had killed.

“Not mine, two guys, lots of blood, but medics have them now” Dani spoke beginning to shake Dustin blinked

“What?” he whispered clearly confused

“They fell I did what I could, tampon in leg and bandage on chest” She covered her face then whispering but her voice was shaking. Then threw her arms around her brother whispering into his chest “I killed them, I tried to to to he- help” she swallowed hard. “I couldn’t stop the bleeding, I just had a tampon in my pouch, but but I didn’t check to see where the bullet was, what if I drove it into his blood stream?” She took a look where Alex was she couldn’t see him. “Dustin if he dies I don’t know if I can make it, why is he talking to that insurant?” She was silently crying into his chest. “I am sorry Sir” She said to Randy “You must think it was a mistake for me to be here, I just wanted to help” She was clearly over tired having barely slept the last 2 days, and the shock of all that had happened topped with the time change it was all piling up on themselves.

It was clear that she really thought that by treating the two men that she had accidently killed them by her actions. And until she was proved other wise she would continue to think so and be racked with guilt. She looked up at Dustin. “Don’t let them send me home, I will go more crazy there then even here” She whispered through broken sobs. But to her credit she was keeping quiet. “Randy” She whispered “How is Alex” She closed her eyes waiting to hear the answer.

The reporter and his camera man was still reporting what was going on when the lights went out. "They have turned out the lights. This is to give the insurgents a harder target to hit with their mortar rounds. Wait something is happening. The troops are firing out into the darkness." He put on a pair of night vision goggles so he could see. "I have put on a night vision device so I can see." His camera man did the same and adjusted his camera so he could see the reporter in the display window.

"It seems the insurgets are trying to storm the perimeter." he had to talk louder so he could be heard over the sound of the small arms fire. When the insurgents fell back and the soldiers ceased firing, "It has stopped now, but for how long is anyone's guess." He saw wounded being carried or helped to the medical tent. "We have wounded here, looks like a couple serious ones." Just then Alex had lit up the american flag and he turned his attention to that. "It is Sergeant Alex Morgan! He has just lit up the flag he had raised earlier. The same flag that he had raised at that fantastic stand that he and his squad made." The camera man zeroed in on the flag and Alex. "Wait he is talking over a loud speaker. He is taunting the insurgents. No not taunting, something else." When he saw Alex rise and stand by the pole, beneath the flag. "Something is happening. What is he up to?" He moved forward quickly the cameraman running with him. They got up to the top of the burm but a distance away from Dani and her brother.

He was now whispering into the mic, "Sergeant Morgan has decended the outside of the burm and is walking towards a lone insurgent. Both have slung their weapons across their backs and are now talking." he reported as he looked out over the burm.

Randy looked at Dani and smiled. "He is alright. They are talking. I don't know what he is up to or trying, but he is alright and we have his back."

Alex and the insurgent looked at each other. "You have something to say?" Alex asked.

"Your words, your little speach, you know something of the koran?"

"Some." he told the man. "We have solders here that belive in Islam. I have talked to them and they have told me what it says and what your leaders are telling you it says. They have shown me how they are corupting the meaning of the teachings with in it to make you hate us and want to kill us."

"But you are here, invaders. You are not wanted here." he said.

"We came here to get rid of Saddam, and help establish a working government, one that would be fair to the people. But those clerics that are preaching war, want to run this country thier way and make the people do as they say. They want power, absoute power over you and your people. If it were not for them and the constant bombings, killing of innocent people, attacks on us, we would have probably been gone long ago. But they want us to stay by having you do these things so they can make it seem their cause is right. Try to make us give up and leave and leave the country in dismay so they can come and take over."

The man looked at Alex thinking on what he was saying. "Why not give the new government a chance. Give them a couple years to get Iraq back on its feet and prospering again. You can always try it their way if it doesn't work, but why not give the new government a chance. Stop the killings, bombings, the murdering of inocent people that have done you no harm, that are Iraqies, just like you. Believers in Islam and follow the ways of Allah. Stop this insanity and more then likely you will see us all gone a short time later. Your people want us to be gone, but most fear us leaving for what will hapeen to them if we do. I am not sure why Suni and Shietes hate each other so much, but put aside your hatreds and differances, and unite and rebuild this country together."

The man looked as if he was in deep thought. Did Alex's words, rambling make sence to him, perhaps spark something within the mans heart. "There will be no further attack on your compound tonight." was all the man said and then turned to leave, then turned slightly, "Allah be with you." and then he walked off into the darkness. Alex turned and walked back to the compound and began climbing back up the burm. Eager hands helped him up and into the compound.

"There will be no further attacks tonight." he told his company commander and then he saw Dani there crying as Dustin held her." He knelt down and took her into his arms and held her tightly. "It is alright Dani."

Reports came from all around the perimeter that the insurgents were leaving.

It was a good thing that Dani didn’t see the reporter she would have throttled both of them if she saw them for putting Alex in so much danger earlier then thank them for showing her that he was okay then throttle them for doing this now, which could put him in danger yet again but she was too far away and Dustin was holding on to her too hard. Dustin having been held by his baby sister while he wept and fell into a deep depression and now he was holding her. Dani was mumbling something about killing two guys but she was being quiet even in her crying and mumbling everything about her was quiet.

In truth Dani knew that she had to be quiet she wasn’t even supposed to be up here. She turned to Randy as he spoke and nodded wiping away the tears. “Thank you Randy” She swallowed hard trying to gain control of her emotions “I guess you all think I am weak, I am really not I just…” She didn’t finish the statement for there was nothing for her to say. She couldn’t explain that she thought she had killed two of their comrades. That she wanted to be here to help but she was just making a mess of it. She knew (at least it was a fact in her mind) that the men sitting there on the brum all thought of her as a simple-minded weak female, she had only been on the ground for a few hours and had already collapsed twice and now was crying. She tried to order herself to stop but couldn’t. The tears just kept falling down her face. Knowing what her father went through, then what Alex had gone through and now what Alex was going through again she was certain now that she wouldn’t be able to sit at home while Dustin and Alex came back the waiting and not knowing would kill her.

When she heard Alex coming back she began to gather her strength she was fuming at him and now that he was okay he was going to get it. She began to clench her fist and jaw and even Dustin notice. He wanted to warn Alex but had no time. When Alex gave the message that there would be no more attacks it was all Dani needed to know that it was safe to give him hell and hold nothing back.

As he took her from Dustin and told her it was all right she pushed away from him. And although she wasn’t yelling she was talking loud enough to be over heard.

“No it is not alright Alex” She glared at him. “Do you not want to get married to me, is that why you keep endangering yourself? Do you have some sort of death wish? Give me more dog tags for me to wear around my neck? Do you really enjoying scaring the shit out of me, and if you think you are leaving me behind when you come back you are mistaken I am NOT staying home alone worrying about you. You are stuck with me and I am coming back!” She glared at him “Plus I am not done my job, I have no idea how the moral of this base is” She smiled “And if you scare me again you will not have to worry about the insurants”

She shook her head and brought a hand to her head. A bit ashamed of her little outburst she blushed “I’m sorry I am just worried about the injured men” She looked up at Randy with fear in her eyes she was ignoring Alex, too afraid that if she looked at him she would break down “Can you take me to them? I am really worried that I…” She didn’t finish that thought though. She waited for someone to take her to the two that she either saved or killed.

With one last thought she smiled a wicked smiled. Turning her head back to Alex and Dustin “And you two are not off the hook, I do recall promising to duct tape you both to the bed if you got up and although I know why you go out of bed you still disobeyed me” Turning to a Soldier near Alex she asked “So do you have any duct tape here, I suppose rope would work too”

Then back to Randy “Carpal I….I really need to know how those two…men are…doing” She was stammering and shaking lightly. Her face totally showed that she was terrified and she hoped that the darkness hide that fact. She wanted to prove that she could handle this for she did want to come back. She needed to prove that she would be okay in this setting.

Alex was a bit surprised when she pushed away from him but then he understood why. She laid into him for scaring her half to death again. He had hoped that she had stayed in the bunker like he had told her to. But evidently she had not and had come up to the top of the burm to find him gone and out in the middle of the kill zone. He listened to her knowing that she had been through quite a bit in the last day or so. He also knew that she loved him and once she had calmed down and had some sleep she would be her old self again. Or at least he hoped she would.

The guys from his company stood or laid there in their positons as she yelled at him, their eyes going wide and jaws dropping. They didn't think she was weak but perhaps a bit nuts, especially to be marrying some one like Alex. Some chuckled and watched to see what Alex did. When she asked a soldier if they had duct tape, he grinned and said, "Got alot of it miss."

When she told Randy that she wanted to know how the two soldier's were, he looked to Alex. "I'll take you down to to the Med Tent." he told her and again pulled her into his arms. "I am not trying to get myself killed, but help keep others alive, on both sides." he said softly. "As for marring you, that is going to happen. There is no getting out of that my love." he grinned. "As for you staying here, or returning when I do, that is not going to be up to me or you, but the Army and of course the Congressman." he then helped her down from the top of the burm and towards the Med Tent.

Down at the Med Tent the Doc was busy in the operating room, working on one then another soldier that had been wounded in the attack. Some was from shrapnel from the mortar shells and a few were from bullet wounds. The two that Dani had helped lay on cots, IV's in their arms, their wounds wrapped. Both were asleep from drugs to put them that way while they healed. Others lay on cots being tended to by medics as they waited to go into the operating room.

The reporter reported everything that had taken place. Though he did not know what Alex and the Insurgent had talked about, it was evident that Alex had convinced the man to have the other insurgents to leave. "This is an astounding young man. He thinks nothing of himself but everything of his fellow soldiers. He puts himself in the face of danger again and again to save others." He was about to make his way to Alex and Dani to find out what he had said, but the company commander intercepted him and told him to back off.

"Those two have gone thourgh some tramatic hours in the last 24 hours. Give them time to unwind and get some sleep before hounding them with questions."

The reporter licked his lips and nodded. He had a job to do but he was not like some that would ignore people's needs and press them. "Alright Captain. I guess I can get the rest of the story when he heads back to the Statess."

Hearing that they had duct tape made Dani smile “You hear that you two, I will be using it to hold you in bed, I am sure any of these men will help me. You will never disobey me again” She was all talk though she had never felt so tired before in her life. She was running on fumes all she wanted to do was check on the two men and climb into bed even the thought of a shower did not appeal to her right now. She of course did not want Alex or any of the others to know how tired she was feeling. She wanted to remain strong but as soon as her head hit the pillow she knew that she would be asleep, as long as she was in Alex’s arms. That was if he would come to bed, she had just finished reaming him out in front of his men, surely he was embarrassed but it wasn’t completely her fault it was his for scaring her, and the lack of sleep, and the time difference, there was a lot of things working against her.

When Alex came forward to take her down Dani almost rejected him fearing that if he got too close she would fall apart again but as he pulled her in to his arms she melted. She felt so safe in his arms. She looked up at him. “I know you are doing your best Alex, I just love you so much I don’t know what I would do if anything happened to you” She said softly her voice trembling. She stroked his cheek softly. “You are right we will get married” She kissed his lips softly. “If you can handle my mood swings” She said with a soft chuckle

“Good luck with that” Dustin chocked on that line and since he was in arms reach Dani reached over and punched him hard in the arm. The men around them gasped and chuckled. If there were any doubt that Dani was the woman for Alex it was gone now.

. “I want all you to come” She said into the still darkness hoping that the men would come and stand there for them, she of course wanted a Military wedding his men, her fathers men and Dustin’s group too. She wasn’t sure though how Alex felt about that, all in good time she would tell him.

As he helped her down the burm and to the medical tent she began to lean more and more on Alex. Her body was feeling heavier and her eyes were drooping, but she had to know how they were, then she would go to bed. As they entered Dani buried her face into Alex’s chest too scared to see the truth then taking a deep breath she slowly turned to see the men.

When she saw them lying there, alive and well she gasped and raced to them then looked up at Alex “I didn’t kill them” She said quietly very shocked and surprised. She had tears in her eyes but anyone that was looking at her could tell that she had a weight lifted off of her. She brought her hands to her eyes and whipped them clear. “I didn’t kill them, I thought I had, I thought I had screwed up, I really thought I killed them” A medic hearing what she had said came forward.

“Ma-am you saved these two they would have bled out before the medics could even get to them” He paused. “What ever made you think of using a tampon to clog the wound? It was the prefect size” Dani looked up at him

“It was the only thing I had, I knew I had to stop the bleeding of both of them, but the one with the chest wound needed more attention, he asked me to tell his wife and daughter he loved them, I told them I wouldn’t that he would have to, seemed to calm him down, after he called me stubborn that is” She laughed slightly. “Guess I am stubborn”

“Well I want you to know I am going to see that every service man and woman starts carrying them around they might balk at the idea but after they hear that it saved lives I am sure they will agree it’s a good idea.” The young medic said

“They are also good for cleaning your gun and stopping oil leaks in the vehicles” Dani said.

Finally she yawned and sighed. The men were okay. She turned to Alex. “Now to duct tape both of you into bed” But she leaned into his arms barely having the strength to lift her head. “Alex I know you are busy but can you lay with me at least for a little while? I know I haven’t showered, but I just want to lay down” She looked up at him her eyes having dark black circles under them. “I will be better, just with the time change and everything that happened” She couldn’t finish the thought before a yawn came and nearly made her collapse even further into his chest but she looked up at him again and kissed his lips “I didn’t kill them Alex, I thought I did”

Dani was fighting to keep her eyes opened. She was barely able to stand up her knees kept buckling. “Alex I do love you and I am sorry I yelled at you” She looked back at the men. “I really thought I had killed them” She looked up at Alex. “I love you” She said again and closed her eyes and was nearly asleep on her feet in his arms. “Can I shower tomorrow” She said quietly she was losing the battle to stay awake. She wanted to make sure Dustin and Alex were in bed before she finally gave in though but she lacked the strength to even walk to the cot never mind to duct tape both of them into the cots as she had promised. She knew her brother would give her hell for that right now she just wanted to go to bed.

He felt her leaning against him as they walked to the Medical Tent. He could tell she was exausted and it would not be long before she collasped. Once inside she saw the two wounded soldiers she had helped and went to them. She was so relieved that they had not died, and that she had not screwed up and killed them. When she asked him to lay down with her, he knew that it would be impossible to do that in the Med Tent but the medics came to the rescue. One of them escorted him and Dani to the Doc's tent which he rarely used, since he had a place just off the Med Tent to sleep. Bringing an extra cot and blankets he set it up next to the other one already there then left.

Once the medic was gone, Alex removed her bloody body armore and laid her down on the Doc's cot. Then he put his rifle down and undid his body armor and stuff and placed it on the ground with his helmet. Once she was down on the cot, and he had gotten rid of his stuff, he removed her boots and then sat down and took his off before laying down on the cot next to her. "Now it is my turn to give you orders, young lady. Close those beautiful eyes and get some sleep. I'll be here with you." he leaned over and kissed her lips gently and put an arm over her. Alex him self was tired. the stress and strain of the day, his wounds and the long hours had finally gotten to him. He closed his eyes and was soon asleep.

A couple hours later the soldiers at the entrance of the compound radioed in that a vehicle was approaching. Immediately a platoon of men were climbing the burm their weapons at the ready. But the truck slowed down, then stopped just within the lighted area of the compounds outer lights. Two men tied hand and foot were dumped out of the back of the pick up truck before it again moved, turning around and heading back to Bagdad. A squad exited the compound their weapons up and ready to fire as they slowly approached the two men. When the reached them one knelt down and looked at them closely and exaimed them to see if they were wired with explosives. Finding none he took out a small deck of cards with pictures on them. "Well lookie here boys. Looks like we have a couple of important guests." he chuckled. Standing up he bent down and gabbed one by his clothing. "Come on guys lets get these two inside. I think the Battalion Commander will want to know who has showed up at our doorstep. The others grabbed the other man and helped with the one he had and soon both men were dragged inside the compound.

"Get the Battalion Commander and S2 out here." he called to the man with the radio. We got ourselves some important company and I think they will want to talk to these two." Both men were up there in the ranks of the insurgents. Both had been responsible for planning and the execution of a number of bombings. Both were leaders of the insurgents. When the Battalion Commander arrived with the S2 Officer the soldier handed him the two cards with their pictures on it. The Battalion Commander shook his head.

"That crazy stunt Sergeant Morgan pulled paid off." he said to the S2 Officer, "That boy has to be the luckiest or is in the wrong line of work." Turning to the man with the radio. "Get a hold of Division Headquarters. Tell them we have two for interrigation and let them know who they are."

The reporter who seemed to never sleep, was there getting every little detail he could by just listening. He had more to report when he got all the details. "Damn that boy is fast becoming a legeand." he chuckled.

Feeling her legs move but not doing it herself Dani was nearly sleepwalking. She tried to stay awake, but the relief of seeing the two Soldiers alive finally allowed her to let the dam break and for her to finally allow the weight of the day to flood over her. She opened her eyes slightly too look around seeing that they were some more private room then where they where before made her smile, maybe he would really lay with her and hold her.

She tired to object as he started to take off the body armor, but she realized that they were alone so she stopped. Her head was throbbing and the world was spinning around her. She had gone pass exhaustion and wasn’t even herself she was trying to speak but the words were not forming and when they did they only came out as mumbles. . She felt herself being lowered on to a cot she opened her eyes to smile at Alex. “I love you” She mumbled.
As he laid down she immediately turned her body to him, being careful for his new wounds. She almost back talked him when he ordered her to close her eyes, just to tease him but she was even to weary for that. She would let him win this time, for she was really tired nodding she yawned “Yes Sir” She teased then softly kissed him back cuddled into him and quickly fell asleep in his arms

Meanwhile Dustin who thought he was off the hock since his sister had gone to bed had planned to stay up for the rest of the night watch but the commanding officer seeing him walked up to him. “Soldier go to bed or I will have your squad follow through with your sisters threat, just because she is too tired to follow through does not mean that we wont” Dustin started to object but standing behind the CO was his squad all with duct tape and rope in hand. “Yes Sir” Dustin saluted then walked down the burm into the medics’ tent. He looked around “Where is my sister?” He asked. A medic smiled “Her and Alex needed some privacy” Dustin nodded, knowing both Alex and Dani just needed to be together. He wondered if his sister would now have nightmares only time would tell.

He stripped off his armor and undid did his boots, and positioned his helmet and weapon much like Alex had and laid down and was soon asleep. Although it wasn’t for long his training caused him to wake when he heard the commotion outside quickly sitting up and putting on his shoes he started to go outside but the commander came up to him.

“Back to bed Soldier it is being handled” Dustin began to object but the commander held up his hand “That is an order think of your sister, she needs you to be well.” Dustin sighed and trudged back to bed and slipping off his boots and laid back down and closed his eyes. He knew they were right, if something happened Dani would blame her self since she went to bed instead of duct tapping him to bed. Although he felt as if he was missing out but he also knew his sister would give him hell. So it was better all around if he just went to bed. Eventually sleep did reclaim him.

Alex slept good now knowing that the compound would be safe for awhile and that Dani was safe and beside him. He slept until the sounds of people running back to their defencive positions woke him. Like Dustin he pulled on his boots to go to the tent door to see what was going on. He saw Dustin and the Company Commander and heard Dustin being ordered back to bed. He figured since Dustin's squad was also there, that there was no immediate danger. He went back to his cot and laid down again, looking at Dani sleeping. He worried about her. It was one thing hearing about fire fights or seeing things on TV but to be there when things were happening, to know someone in a firefight and to watch it was another. Then to have two wounded soldiers fall into your lap, it was not something alot of people not trained to handle. As a soldier, he expected to see people wounded, but not the way he had when he first got there. That had thrown him, and had caused the nightmares later on. He hoped she would not have those nightmares.

Again he fell asleep and this time slept the rest of the night. In the morning he got up and dressed. Though still a bit stiff and sore he was not doing to bad. He wanted to have Dani's wish for a shower come true so as she continued to sleep he went out side to find the womens shower facility. There were support units there as well as the battalion, and they had female soldiers. Once he found them he talked to a couple people and arranged it for Dani to take a shower, before returning to the tent and sitting down to wake her up. He had some clean clothes for her, cammo uniforms but at least clean ones. "Wake up my love. That is if you want to get a shower." he grinned as he gently shook her shoulder.

After her day Dani was dead to the world. Normally she would have felt Alex leaving her, she would have gone to see where he was going. Would have seen both the brother and Alex out of bed and would have made good on her promise to duct tape them both to their beds, then would have spent an entire night awake again, but she was too tired her body to exhausted and worn out. Her mind needed time to heal, she had seen so much, been attacked on the way to the base, had seen the shoot out on the TV live, had thought she had lost her fiancé, seen her brother very injured, then her fiancé. Had two men fall on her, tended to them the list went on. She defiantly needed the sleep.

When he came back to their cots Dani still asleep turned into his arms again and sighed in her sleep. It was still a dreamless sleep. Her mind still protecting her against the shock of what she had been through today and the day before. The dreams would come though; even in her sleep she seemed to know that the dreams would come, and it might be Alex waking her up and holding her but not this night. This night her mind and body just needed rest.

When Alex woke her in the morning she groaned, momentarily thinking that they were at home and he was waking her up for school, but then the wave of the morning heat hit her. She groaned and looked up at him with a weary smile on her face. “Good morning baby” She reached up and stroked his cheek. But then his words hit her, only a few minutes after it happened. “Did you say shower?” She sat up fast. “Ohh please yes” She grinned and threw her arms around his neck then lowered her arms. “Oh sorry” She blushed “Guess I really stink” She frowned.

“But please I want that shower” She nodded then saw the new clothes. “Hmmm how are you going to tell me from the others” She winked Then she stood up and grabbed her small bag that she had packed with her shampoo. “So where do I go” She made sure to say “i” and not us so he knew that although she missed him and ached for him they couldn’t do anything with all of the Soldiers around. She kissed him softly “I love you by the way”
