Cale was a few yards ahead of her when he realized she wasn't following him. He stopped Faith and turned around, just as Mari caught up with him. He listened to her stammering over her words, and his smile grew with each one until finally, he reached over and cupped her cheek. Then he kissed her before breaking away to dismount and lead Faith up a rocky incline. Normally he would have ridden up the slope, but with Faith's leg and Kay tagging along, he had to be careful.

Zenith jolted forward again , ears twitching madly and hooves stomping on the ground to kill the offending snake, though it had already slithered off, she was still freaking out. pulling against the bit in her mouth before suddenly jolted into a complete circle, searching for the snake. mari heard a loud snap from under her and before she knew it her and the saddle got flung off of Zenith as she jerked into a circle again.. Giving a soft grunt as she hit the ground on her side, hands still clutching the reigns, she was up in an instant. Jerking Zenith's head down with the reign's to keep her from rearing up suddenly out of fright. Everything Zenith's body moved in a circle, Mari followed, giving her a few minutes to relax and realize the snake was no longer there.. By the time Zenith calmed down and wasn't jerking an the slightest movement, mari was already out of breath and covered in dirt from having to roll away from slashing out hooves.. " that had been a surprise, all her other horses didn't spook from snakes. they just avoided them all together her right hip ached from where she landed on it, and she was pretty sure she would have a bruise later, but she could live with that since nothing was broken.. Glancing around she spotted her saddle and other supplies scattered about . giving a sigh of annoyance, though not at Zenith , she lightly patted her neck. " good girl.. least you didn't step on me. " making sure there there was no other snakes around. and thinking the only reason the snake struck out was because they had probably disturbed his resting spot. she took the reigns and just lightly looped them around a low branch. " trying not to look too embarrassed by falling off the horse she rolled the saddle over once reaching it, and picked up the strap, confused as to why it had broken since it was a new saddle,. finding the spot that snapped she scowled. it wasn't jagged like it would be from a normal pressure snap. it had a clean cut down to about the middle of it. and just her body weight from moving on Zenith and the weight of her supplies had snapped it the rest of the way. " well bloody hell.. saddle got sabotaged." she only knew of two people who had a grudge agianst her.. one of them she figured was too much of a panzy to get her nails dirty , let alone risking horse crap on her shoes to get to the tack room..

Cale had been just about to take her to the heart of the little sanctuary, where the triceratops skeleton peered out from the sandstone wall. He had camped there often, and there were signs of it. Minimal signs, true enough, but signs nonetheless. And just as he'd moved to face her, he saw the snake and Zenith's panic. But before he could not only register what was going on but react, she'd already gotten the situation under control.
He lifted his leg over Faith's saddle as she ran, and steered her aside before he slid off and onto his feet in one fluid motion.
He came up beside the antsy Zenith, and looked into her wild eyes, and began speaking to her in his smoother, more mysterious tongue while he stroked her.
When he was sure the palomino was calm, and uninjured, he gently took the reigns from Mari, and with a caring swat on Zenith's rump he sent her to join Faith.
"Are you okay?" Cale said, inspecting his love for damage. "Did it bite you?"
He gave a short, punctual whistle to Aoife so she could start gathering Mari's scattered belongings, and about then he noticed she was favoring her hip.
"Let me see that." he said, then lifted the hem of her shirt and respectfully pulled her waistband down. A bruise was already forming.
"Damn. I hope it isn't broken."

Cale listened in silence, inspecting the bruise. "Sorry... It's just I'm concerned. MJ ran around on a hairline fracture for three days before she went in for x-rays."
He sighed, then said, "We'll take it easy today, and I'll whip up some of that herbal tea. But if that bruise doesn't look any better tomorrow morning, I'm calling for a chopper. I'm not going to have my girlfriend get an infection and septicemia in her hip because she was out here injured. Now, let me see your foot."
He saw her expression, then said, "Sorry. I believe you, but I worry."
He carefully took her boot off, just to give him peace of mind that the rattler really hadn't pierced her skin.
When he was satisfied with his inspection of her foot, he put her boot back on for her. He then looped his arm around her torso and guided her up the hill, to where the skeleton peered out from the wall, under a sheltering ledge. The bones were stained a darker color than the rock, and he said, "I won't allow the paleontologists to take it out of here, because they'd have to destroy the whole cliff and the clearing and everything, but I do let them come once in a while to study it, and brush a protective coating onto the bones when it's necessary. To keep them from eroding, you know. But it's only two at a time and no heavy machinery."
He laid her down in the grass then, and said, "I'm going to do a check on your hip, if you don't mind. Just to put my mind at ease. Now, tell me if anything starts hurting."
He then gently lifted her leg, flexing it gently and slowly, and moved it into a variety of angles and states of flex, and he breathed a little easier each time.
Then he set her leg down, and smiled as he lied down beside her, then gave her a kiss. "Perhaps we won't need the chopper after all."

turning back to him she smiled." you have got to teach me how you make that tea by the way. i enjoy it. " she patiently accepted his once over again as he laid her down and tested her hip movement. half closing her eyes and only making a small grunt of discomfort when the fabric of her pants rubbed against the tender spot. but all in all her hipbarely even hurt. smiling she kissed him back as he laid down with her. " might have bruised the bone too but thats about it. and thats good that those guys can come out and put coating over the bones. . she frowned slightly before sighing. . going to be a pain going back home you know. i can ride bare back but that would make me sore too.. zenith might be able to care the stuff and i can ride double with you. but i am not sure how that will work."

He got up then, reluctantly, and went to collect the mares. He brought them, Kay prancing along behind playfully, back up to the clearing, where there was an old fire pit, and a few other signs that the place had known camping before. But it was remarkably pristine--a good sign that when the paleontologists were out here, they were escorted by the cowboy himself.
Cale started to set up the camp, letting his love just relax. As he brushed the mares, he broke his soft humming to say, "This place is my sanctuary. I come here to run in my pelt, and be a little closer to the earth and the past and the real world. It's my home away from home, as it were."
He then saw to her saddle. "I'll skin the bitch who cut this." he looked at her. "Trust me, this has Hope written all over it. I can try and fix the strap, but it'll only be good for carrying supplies. Looks like we'll have to ride double. And since I'm convinced now your hip isn't broken, we can walk some of the way, alternate the mares the rest. Not fair to one to have to carry both of us the whole trip, you know."
He then excused himself and went down to the river, collecting some water then returning and boiling it clean before straining it into a coffee pot. "You say you want to learn how to make the rose tea?"

He produced a pouch with an assortment of herbal concoctions int it, all in separate Ziploc bags. He pulled out one labelled 'Rose Tea', then opened it and sprinkled some into his palm. "C'mere," he asked, then showed her the herbs, singling each piece as he explained to her.
"Ginseng, poppy seed, pomegranate seeds, blue sage, blueberries, and rose petals mixed with a few eastern spruce needles."
He put a couple of pinches into filter paper, then dropped the little packet into the pot.
"At least, this is the ideal combination. I had to use a watered down version the other night when you hurt your ankle, just the blueberries, poppy seed, and the petals from the roses on your dining room table."

He poured the tea then lay on his side next to her again, looking down at the river through the boughs of the trees.
"Maybe later we can go swimming. It'll help the ache in your hip."
