She laughs at his comment. "That would be funny to see. Maybe then they would get their act together. But I doubt that my father would let that happen. My sisters are very spoiled. They don't know how to do anything for themselves. I was kind of the servant of the family. But I do love them all. It is just sometimes they can be a pain in the butt." When he gets up she slowly gets up from the bed. "I can come down for dinner. I just might move a little slower than normal. Unless you don't like dealing with a slow poke?"

Kaimar couldn't believe it, but he started laughing and not in pleasure at seeing someone else's pain. He laughed because he thought her genuinely funny in her comment. As she got up to follow him down, he stopped and turned. It was true, he hated being slow about anything. He came back to her and stooped down somewhat to look her level in the eyes. For the first time, he allowed her to see the brilliant blue colour in them. He shocked himself a second time then as he held his arms out to her. "Would you like me to carry you?"

Ella smiles as she hears him laugh a real laugh. "If you think that funny, you should hear of the year my eldest sister tried to cook a dinner. You would have thought a mad scientist was living in there." She watches his reaction to her being a slow poke comment. Was he really offering to carry her? And man were his eyes gorgeous. She blushes slightly. "Well we would get to dinner much faster but I would not want to make you uncomfortable." She keeps her head down as she was fighting to get her blushing cheeks under control.

Kaimar offered a sly grin, but being a gentleman wasn't his forte, so he simply reached out and grabbed her up in his massive arms. "I'd like to hear all about it over dinner." He said and began walking from the room.

Downstairs, on hearing about the master's sudden and rather shocking change of heart, everything was in chaos. The kitchen most of all as it sprung into life to prepare a feast for the pair. Everywhere else began to clean up a little and make the best of the darkness and dreariness of the castle. Old chandeliers were brought back into working order and lit up while dusters and brooms danced about the place to clean away the centuries of gloom. The hideous statues and paintings couldn't be helped for the time being, but once cleaned up, they at least looked half decent. Drapes and rugs were escorted outside and given a stern beating to rid them of dust and muck before being restored and candelabras were cleaned up and stocked with candles to light the old halls. By the time Kaimar made it downstairs with his young charge, things looked quite clean and well cared for.......

Ella smiles as he carries her to the kitchen. She had a feeling that he like that he could make her a little nervous. She let's him carry her as she had a feeling that he liked to put her on edge. Once he put her down, she looked around to see what the others were doing. She could smell something good cooking. "My sister Alex was trying to make a dinner for my father after he had finally come home after a very long trip. Now keep in mind my sisters have never had to cook for themselves let alone another person. The whole time she was swearing and screaming as she kept breaking her nails. We could hear things hitting the walls and sounding like everything was going to blow up. But no matter what she wouldn't let anyone in the kitchen. Finally she came out with some odd casserole dish. We all smiled and tried a little bit of it, it tasted like the fishy crab oil that nurses make you eat in order to get better from a cold."

Kaimar listened intently at Ella's tale of her sister's attempt to cook for the family and it made him smile.  In fact, he reminded him of his first attempt to do something for himself.  It had been such a disaster that the cook had banished him from the kitchen for life and his mother had laughed so hard that she had cried.  The idea that it tasted like cold oil made him laugh and he nodded, vaguely remembering the taste of the vile liquid when he was a child.

The entire kitchen buzzed with whispers and gossip as they watched their bad tempered master relent and laugh like he meant it.  The twinkle in his eyes was the big give away that he was actually enjoying the conversation.  The stove cooked up a storm with fresh bread and broth to help Ella regain her strength and once everything was done and cooling, a large churn hopped into the room and produced a large pat of fresh butter to spread on the warm bread if she wanted it.

"Sounds to me like a very interesting arrangement in your father's house."  He said with a chortle, "But it is a shame that you are left in service to them.  As the baby of the family, surely it should be them taking care of you, not the other way around."  He sat back as the broth, bread and butter were served and then looked at Ella to see if she approved of the meal.  It had been served straight to the kitchen table instead of the usual grandeur of the dining hall, but Kaimar didn't mind.  He rather liked the more intimate cosiness in the kitchen and it showed.....

Ella looks at him as he evaluated her family situation. "My family has a way of doing things very differently from other families. My sisters' habits had become permanent by the time I was born. So they did not how to take care of a younger sister. My father had them with another wife. She did not teach them how to take care of others. They only know how to take care of themselves. But they do try to help where they can." She looks at the meal and smiles. It was simple and it was clear that they put how she was feeling in consideration when preparing it. "Everyone is very considerate of how I am feeling. This meal is perfect for me right now."

Kaimar listened and began to relax further as she complimented the simple meal.  "Indeed they can be."  He said in agreement as he picked up the bowl of broth and began to drink it.  A spoon wasn't really an option with paws and claws and the mouth one could fit a dinner plate into.  He nodded with a small sigh of 'this is damned good'.....

Ella ate her meal in silence knowing that he could not help that he could not hold a spoon. She ate until she was full and then let her mind wonder to what this castle was like in its prime. Fancy dinners and parties. Elegant music and people having a good time. “This place will someday be filled with join again.” Her magic reacting to her emotions began to rapidly change everything around them. She blushed in embarrassment. “Sorry. I did not mean to. Magic is just emotions taking on a physical form. My mother died before she could teach me how to control it.”

Kaimar was about to voice his agreement when things around them began to change.  He looked around in shock at how quick it happened and before he knew it, the table had been restored and the magic was spread to throughout the kitchen.  Clean pristine marble worktops shone, ceramic tiles on the floors and walls also gleamed and the cook appeared in her old uniform and spun around to look on Kaimar in shock.  "Cookie?"  Kaimar almost fell of his stool to go to the woman and she in return, held her arms out to him and cried in joy.
"Kaimar!"  She cried, "Oh, my precious prince!"  But then it began to falter and Cookie started to melt back into the stove.

Kaimar skid to a halt and turned on his heel to find Ella blushing with embarrassment.  "No!"  Kaimar cried as he ran to Cookie once more.  "Don't go!"  He turned quickly back to Ella and went to her.  "Bring her back!"  He demanded, "Whatever it was you did, do it again!"  His stunning blue eyes shone with real tears.  He even reached out to take her by the shoulders, but he stopped short of shaking her.  "Please Ella!  Do it again!"  He pleaded.......

Ella saw him coming undone. She reaches out to him and strokes his cheek. Wiping away tears that were going down his face. "All I can do is try. I can't promise you anything Kaimar." She turned to the kitchen and focused her energy and magic. Everything was glowing around them. Soon she made the cook take human form again. But it was a little different. She made it where the cook could stay in human form. She then sat down her whole weak from the spell. "She should not have to melt into the kitchen ever again Kaimar." She covers her face with a napkin as blood comes out her nose and eyes.

From panic and loss, Kaimar beamed with happiness again as he watched Cookie return and when he learned she would stay that way, he almost jumped with joy.  But his happiness was short lived.  As he turned, he saw Ella covering her nose and there was blood coming from her eyes and onto the napkin.  This was too much.

Running back to Ella, he scooped her up in his arms and held her.  "No!"  he said quickly, feeling genuine concern for the girl.  "Cookie!"  He cried, "Find me a doctor!  Ella is bleeding!"  Cookie immediately ran from the kitchen to find some help......

Ella felt him holding her and she looked up at him as it slowly stopped and the wounds healed. “Kaimar. It is okay. You can put me down.” She gently strokes his face. “I am using strong magic that my body was not trained to use. Think of it as a muscle, the more I use my magic, the stronger I will get and the less it will hurt. It was just a little blood. Nothing like when I use my healing spell.” She rests her head against his stone hard chest. “Now call Cookie back before you work the whole castle into a frenzy.”

"Not on your life!"  Kaimar almost boomed and soon enough, Cookie returned with a ripple in the floor and Chuck.  "She's hurt."  Kaimar said to Chuck.  The ripple in the floor began to stand up, though no certain form was visible.  "Well?"  He asked the ripple.
"Put her to bed."  The ripple said, "Let her rest and regain her strength.  She's right that she needs to practice, but you should expect nothing more than baby steps until she has learned to control it.".....

Ella huffed at him and just stayed still. “It was not that big a deal. At least now we know that I do have the ability to reverse the curse.” She almost sounded like she was pouting because she could not stay out of bed. Kaimar’s cold chest felt good to head right now and she honestly did not like to be alone when she did not feel good. She looks at them all. “I will be fine.” She looks at the walls knowing the young children were watching. “Everyone you don’t need to worry. I will be fine.”

"I'll not take that chance."  Kaimar said firmly and began walking her back upstairs.  Once he was sure they were alone, he hoisted her up a little higher so he could speak quietly, just in case.

"I apologise for making you do that."  He said, keeping his voice as quiet as he could, "I should have remembered what happened to you in the garden, but I could only see my own desire."  He lowered his head, almost resting it on top of hers.  "It will not happen again, Miss Ella.".....

Ella sighs as Kaimar takes her to bed. She felt like a little kid being carried off to bed. She lies on the bed and looks at him as he was next to her. She gently strokes his face. “It’s fine Kaimar. You were finally happy. I am glad to help you keep your happiness.” She looks into his eyes. “You deserve to be happy Kaimar.” She covers up with a few blankets and lies on her side to make it easier to visit with him. “I will be better in a few days. But may ask, do you have any books on magic? I would use my mother’s magic book but that is at my father’s house locked up with the rest of my mother’s things.”

Kaimar backed up and sat in a chair as she made herself comfortable in her bed.  He deserved to be happy?  The gargoyle shook his head, "Not in a hundred lifetimes."  He said, "Not for me.  Not for what I am, Ella."  He turned his head away until she mentioned some books on magic.  His head snapped back.

"Well, um."  He said, "There is an extensive collection of witchcraft and occult references in the castle's library.  I could send Chuck to have a look for you, if you like?"  Kaimar didn't go in the library, hadn't set foot in it for more than two hundred years.....

Ella looks at him a moment and says trying to calm him, “You do deserve to be happy. You just need someone to show you the way.” She cuddled up to him a little. “If that won’t be a bother too much to Chuck to retrieve those.” Her eyes look at his beastly body and she puts her hand on his chest where his heart is. “Your heart is still strong, you are still a man.” She rests her head against him and she slowly goes to sleep.

The sudden closeness and then the snuggling suddenly made Kaimar feel incredibly conscious of his form and very uncomfortable.  He tried to stay calm as she fell asleep, but as soon as her breathing steadied, he put her back to bed and crept out of the room as quickly and as quietly as he could.  Once outside, he took a deep breath and then let it go, blowing out several candles along the wall.  Then a shiver ran up and then down his spine and he quickly walked away.

He arrived in his rooms shortly after and felt instantly better in his own surroundings again.  By the door, Chuck peered around, wondering what mood his master would be in.  The gossips had already told him what Ella wanted and from where, but he wanted to check on the truth of the rest of the gossip.  What he saw made him smile, but also made him nervous.  Kaimar was curled up in a tight ball on his ramshackle bed with his cape over his head and he was actually sleeping......

Ella wakes up the next day and looks around for Kaimar and her eyes saddened as she realized he left. She gets up and changes into a simple white dress. She goes out of her room only for a moment before she starts to feel dizzy again. She goes back to the bed. “I wonder if it would be alright if I write my father a letter. Maybe he would bring me mother’s book? I will wait and ask Kaimar if I can when he wakes up.”

As Ella made her way back to bed, Chuck arrived with a stack of books and he smiled warmly as he entered the room and put them on a table near the door.  "We could send the letter out for you, Miss Ella."  He said politely, "With the master's permission, of course.  I'm sure he wouldn't mind, not after what has happened these last few days.".....

Ella looks at Chuck with a smile and says, “Good morning Chuck. Thank you for getting the books for me.” She was clearly still very weak. “I do not want to do anything to upset Kaimar. So I will wait until we have permission to send the letter before I write it.” She looks at the books slowly. The books had information on magic but no help on gaining control over. She holds her chest as she feels her energy fading again. She looks at her hands as they tremble and she lies down again. “Looks like I am still paying the price. It will be a while before I can do any big spells.”

Chuck quickly retrieved some blankets to cover Ella against any chill as he watched her hands tremble.  "Fear not."  He said with a warm smile, "We will take care of you."  He patted her hand with his hideous feathered one.  "And don't worry about your magic.  This castle has been this way for centuries already.  Waiting a while longer is nothing.  Besides."  He sat down on the edge of the bed and smoothed her hair behind her ear, "What use is your magic if you can't be around to see the benefit of it for us?  You are far more important to us than your spells, young Miss, and I believe you are far more important to the Master too."

In his own rooms, Kaimar woke to find a bluebird sat singing on his balcony.  He stared at it as it sang and felt a warmth in his heart that he hadn't felt for a long time.  That warmth led him to rise with a weird smile on his face and for the first time in centuries, he stared at the remains of his desk.  After righting it, he tapped the wall behind and asked the hands to bring him ink, a good quill and several sheets of clean paper, a candle and his royal seal.  Shortly after the items arrived, he squatted at the desk and began to write a letter.

It has come to my attention that my thoughts and behaviour towards you and your family has been that of a tyrant and of a despicable character.  In the days since your daughter's arrival, I have been forced to reconsider much of what I know and her presence here has started what I can only describe as the most magical and most integral changes to myself and my home that has been laid to myth for many years.

I understand that you fear her detention here, but I want to assure you that your thoughts are not true.  Though I have tried to keep her as a prisoner, her sweet nature and unwavering kindness has proven too much for my once cold heart.  That being so, I have taken to heart a request she has made of me.  Within her, I feel a strong sense of magic and what she has shown me has been for lack of a better term, unbelievable, but her inability to control this magic has left her weakened and I fear she may become ill should she insist on performing her magic further. 

Ella has made mention of a spell book or grimoir that once belonged to her mother and she has requested that it be sent to her so she might learn the controls needed for her magic.  Thus, I write to you to ask that you send the book as requested.  However, she has also made mention that she has missed her family and in light of my perhaps new perspective thanks to her, I feel it would benefit her to see you if only for a short time.

Many years ago, when I was still a boy, my father would open the castle to his subjects in honour of the winter tythes.  I understand that the present condition and state of the castle makes an opening impossible, but as winter has now come to my lands, I would still very much like to respect the tythes as they once were in honour of Ella and her unconditional heart to both myself and my home.  Included with this letter, I offer an invite to yourself and your daughters to attend the tythes.  I ask only that you all arrive safely and that you will keep an open mind to what will lay before you.  In return, I will offer what fineries and accommodation I can for your stay and you will be permitted to stay for as long as you desire.

As he put the quill back into the ink, Kaimar took a deep breath and folded the letter carefully, adding the wax and then his seal to it.  He then stood up.  "Paige!"  he yelled.  A small boy appeared behind the desk and collected the letter.  "Deliver this to Ella's father and bring me a reply."  The boy nodded and disappeared with the letter.  Kaimar then looked around his rooms and took another deep breath.  "Workers!"  he called.  Several hands and faces appeared in the walls around him.  "The Winter has come."  He said, "And the tythes are due.  We have three weeks before the tythes night and I have invited Miss Ella's family for the festival.  Make this castle safe for them."  The hands and faces disappeared and within an hour, groaning and cracking was heard all through the castle as the workers went to work repairing what they could and cleaning the rest.....

Ella looked at Chuck with a smile. She says, "Even with my body being this weak, it does not hinder my desire to see everyone happy. My magic made your master so happy. What if I am unable to do that ever again? What would you do then?"

Ella's father received the letter within a few hours of it being sent. He read over the letter slowly to make sure that he was reading it correctly. His daughter was changing the Beast? How could that be? She wasn't very sociable. She always kept herself.

He slowly went to his wife's chambers and grabbed a stick white leather book. The words Snow Enchantress were scribbled into the cover. He says slowly, "So then this is the path that has been set for my daughter." He makes her sisters pack while he works on writing his reply back to Kaimar.

Dear lord Kaimar,

Do not let Ella cast any more spells. Her body needs to regain the energy she has use the while in your care. Ella is very giving and loving person. She will do everything she can for someone. Including her own life.

I will bring her mother's book with me as my family and I come to this festival of yours. I know you and I made a deal. But if I find that she is unwell or in danger because of the living conditions she is in, I will bring her home. My life is over I am very old. Her life has just begun. I will not have her living in a cage.

He gives the letter to the messenger before having him and his daughters make their way to the castle. What would this evening be like? Dancing among monsters?
